A lot of time is used by having pregnant mothers to have to travel as much as a 100 miles to deliver their babies, if the local hospitals still delivered babies then I feel that we would see a big drop in the mortality rate because any problem that is occurring could be addressed sooner , therefore making it a much faster process all together!REPORT COMMENTS

i am a physician working in the ED. There is a dangerous trend where by hospitals are closing their Labor and Delivery units because they are not profitable or can't find obstetricians to staff them. Sometimes the hospital where the mother is set up to deliver is an hour away. This puts the ED doc in the position of having to keep the patient for delivery or transfer her by EMS putting her and baby at risk. I think the Joint Commission of Hospitals should demand that hospitals that are eligible to receive Medicaid funds have obstetrical units and physicians available.REPORT COMMENTS

This is saddening and very informative being a mother of a 3 year old and another due in Jan makes this scary to find out because I don't know what's in store for my delivery but this angers me that there is no research or studies done on the women who have passed giving birth or after just because we're doing the "natural " doesn't mean it's okay when it doesn't go as planned .. There should be something to do about it not to sound stupid but what if we're a doctors mistake no one would ever know to reprimand or fix what they did wrong...
