I am sick & tired of the people lumping chronic pain patients & opiod/illegal drug users into one group. I have had 2 neck surgeries, 1 spinal fusion & saving up for a 2nd one & will have a spinal chord stimulator put into my lower back soon.I have had pain issues for 26 years of my life. And believe me when i say that i have tried every pain relief thing possible. I do not condone illegal drug abuse! But I'm personally sick & tired of the negativity accorded to people like me that do not have a quality of life with out taking pain medication. I really wish i didn't have to take anything at all. But to ruin my quality of life because of the DEA's & CDC's misguided solution to chronic drug abuse is horrible! Please stop making the Drs that treat chronic pain paitiens scared to help us.REPORT COMMENTS

This is so very upsetting to me. It's not like I chose to have Chronic Pain. I didn't choose to have a spine that is so messed up that I am up against having to have my 4th spinal surgery. I, like so many others, wouldn't have a quality life with out my pain meds. I actually refused pain management for 2 yrs, just for this reason, of being stereotyped and really didn't want to take pain meds. But after 2 yrs of suffering and not being able to wash my dishes, or do laundry, etc...without breaking down in tears and not being able to just do my house work. I haven't been able to work, not even a part time job, because of the pain I deal with. What gives anybody besides my Doctor, the right to tell me how much pain I am in. MRI's, Cat Scans, etc. Tell my story. I am praying the Lord have mercy on those who are judging us and trying to take our meds away.....unfortunately, they have never dealt with any type of pain and just don't care. Please do the right thing and don't let those of us who suffer with everyday pain be lumped in with drug addicts....please!!!!REPORT COMMENTS

My wife has suffered with severe chronic pain for years. She has never once showed signs of drug seeking behavior. She takes her meds as prescribed, the least amount possible, along with abiding every rule her doctor asks of her and brings in extra meds. She wishes she never had to be a patient, as most do. I've known her from the time she was 18 and this woman never even liked alcohol. Before this nightmare began she never took meds. I ask you this, why is she, or any patient, at risk of her pain not being controlled due some new "so called" guidelines? Why are good physicians being spooked? Why are pain patients being tied together with addicts every night on the world news? Where are the advocates from your agency to speak up for them? Why does the CDC/ DEA, or whomever feel they know her case or any patients case better than their own physicians? Why not go after the surgeon who botched up my wife's spine? The one who told her, "just give it 24 months to heal and you'll feel better". Ironically the statue of limitations for malpractise was, you guessed it 2 years! Shouldn't he be held accountable? She's been so stoic. She's handled this with grace and dignity. She was in the prime of her life... The middle of graduate school receiving top honors. She never did get to finish her PhD. She now just tries to maintained a minimal quality of life, at best. She's done this without ever misusing any narcotics. Never once getting hooked on them. Yet, stories like hers are never told. The media seems to think night after night, it's just more interesting to link pain patients with junkies. She receives injections, has gone to PT, tries Reiki, anything she can to try to minimize narcotic intake, yet these medications are beyond important to her quality of life. They keep her pain levels down to a livable, tolerable state. Without them, she would not be able to function with the unrelenting nerve pain. Do not group chronic pain sufferers with addicts. Addicts take narcotics for the thrill. Pain patients take their meds to survive. There's no thrill in pain or anything that's connected to it. If the day ever came where a patient didnt have to take their meds, that would mean freedom, freedom from the captivity that chronic pain brings. Pain patients suffer enough, they don't deserve to be victimized again. They need to receive care and compassion? This is America, my father fought for the freedoms we enjoy, one being privacy and the freedom to be treated with dignity. First do no harm? What happened to that? Not treating pain is dong grave harm! My wife deserves to be cared for. She's earned her right to live in this country. The country where government agencies protect their people, not them harm. Go after the addicts, the gangs, the pushers, not those who suffer, not medical patients. I've watched her attempt to sleep(nap) only an hour at a time due to severe pain. I've watched her sob due to pain and I've watched her legs give out due to herREPORT COMMENTS

Pain pills do help me to manage my life and allow me to continue walking. DEA & government officials.. I am begging you to trade places with me.. Then tell me how to get rid of the pain. I cant even sit in a hot tub to get relief cause then I end up with another infection. Until you walk a mile in my shoes dont judge me or until you live in my body then make an ultimate decision.. You are taking meds away from people that are responsible & they dont deal drugs or sale them. You are just quick to judge so you can make other people's lives miserable. Until you can prove that anyone is over dosing or selling you shouldnt take them off their pain pills. Plus not penalize doctors that are only trying to make their patients lives tolerable.REPORT COMMENTS

I was a registered nurse working in a hospital treating patients when I herniated a disk lifting a pt who fell out of bed. I needed surgery because I couldn't walk anymore then that surgery led to another surgery and it left me with unbearable pain. After being on hydrocodone they were worried about all the Tylenol so they switched me to a fentanyl patch then after awhile, I needed a breakthru medication. Your bodies just get used to the medicine and sometimes u need more to manage the pain. That doesn't mean your a drug addict. I fought hard to return to nursing and the only way I could do that was to have the pain managed. I wasn't high, but I was able to return to work and not lay in a bed wasting my life away. Having the government act as a nations Doctor is wrong-especially for those with valid chronic pain conditions. I hope they all face chronic pain to truly understand what it is like. For me, I was shot near my college by a random drive by shooting. As a result, I suffer with very severe back injuries and pain. I was 19 when it happened, and now I'm 38. I have tried ibuprofen, Tylenol, aspirin, physical therapy, surgery, cortisone, prednisone, muscle relaxers, steroid injections, massage-Every way to treat my pain & still do all of those things to manage it years later. After using 3,200mg of ibuprofen daily at age 21, the doctor suggested opioids to manage the pain. The ibuprofen was causing stomach irritation which, I found out is common with that medicine. The switch to opioids really helped. Opiod medication saved me from wanting to literally end my life from the constant severe pain I was experiencing. The unmanageable pain became manageable. Looking back, prescription medicine has given me a more quality & productive life. I graduated from one of the top universities with a 3.8gpa at 24 years old. I work part time, and have 3 beautiful and happy children. How did I manage during pregnancy? I used opioids for the really bad pain days, and stayed within the limits the doctor gave me. All of my children were born healthy & with NO problems. Managing my pain with opioids is how I am able to go on walks, bike rides and swim with them. I'm still in pain every day, and I knowing that opiods are more and more limited is scary. I have managed my pain as directed legally this whole time. I honestly do not ever want to turn to heroin for pain relief. This is a scary situation to be in for the population with valid chronic pain that has endured military injuries, spinal cord injuries, gun shot wounds, severe car wrecks, other bad accidents, cancer.. My wish is for chronic pain patients to not have to suffer from the results of the reckless & addicts choices. We already suffer enough. Pharmecutical companies have to develop effective, less controversial medicines now because this is a sad time while the government guesses at what to do, groups & stereotypes our treatment. My heart goes out to all our chronic pain population. Thank you for all that have voiced there concerns. Take care..REPORT COMMENTS

It's not fair that I have to pay for people who abuse it. This is just another example of the o administration bypassing the correct procedures and craming down our throats. I have been suffering from fibromyalgia, connective tissue disorder, arthritis, flattening of part of my cervical spinal cord causing pain down my arms and terrible pain in my neck. I have had 2 surgeries in my neck and need another, but I am so afraid of the surgery, I have put it off. I have been on the same amount of opoid medication for years. I signed an agreement with my doctor to only use one doctor and one pharmacy and no illegal drugs. I readily signed it and would welcome any drug testing since I do not use more than I am prescribed and do not use illegal drugs. For years, I used the maximum amount of ibuprofen. It helped a lot at first, but the result of that use was gastritis. Now, I can't even take one without awful pain in my stomach. On occasion, I have a migraine and have to get a shot of toradol. This is a wonderful anti-inflammatory and knocks out pain in a really fast and great way. However, not everyone can take it and I have to eat and take extra stomach meds when I ask for it. I have to take Nexium daily because of NSAID use. I watched in horror as Sanjay Gupta and Drew P basically said if you used a narcotic pain reliever for more than 2 weeks, you were an addict. Drew had previously disagreed with Sanjay that marijuana was sometimes necessary. Sanjay changed his mind from his initial belief against marijuana, but is now on this anti-opoid bandwagon. Why is it that the DEA and CDC are now being allowed to come between patient and doctor? The doctor should know patients better than they. All that needs to be done is for all states to have those of us taking opoid pain meds in a database. The pharmacy could access it and deny the Rx if abuse showed up. I absolutely believe if people are forced to live in intractable pain, they will remove themselves from the equation or find illegal drugs. My doctor hasn't said anything about stopping the pain medication. We already have to plan our lives around the 30 days we have to fill a prescription. Without pain meds, I couldn't do the little I do around my house. I believe we have a right not to be in terrible pain. I believe we have a right not to have the government, the DEA and CDC interfere in the relationship I have with my doctor. Do they believe we have a choice on whether we are in pain or not? If all of these people making decisions like this would have some of what we have for a few months, they would be singing a different song. They are so concerned about accidental drug overdose, but I believe someone had some proof that these accidental overdoses happened less in states where marijuana was legal. It is ridiculous to treat people in genuine pain like addicts when it is life-saving medication to give us some relief. Even laying in bed hurts. Maybe we should all go to Washington and lay on the steps of Congress?REPORT COMMENTS

I am in constant pain, back, leg (sciatic), and feet. my providers have prescribed many different meds from Ibuprofen, Tylenol, muscle relaxers, neuropathic nerve, anti-seizure, anti depression, nothing helps. I'm not depressed. My VA doc says she must stop prescribing narcotic pain meds or lose her license. Why? Because some people abuse it, addicts use it, oh and some over dose with it, so the real pain sufferers must do without it. I have had two back surgeries, years of pain clinic, physical, and chiropractor therapy, nothing helps except hydrocodone pain med. Hope the decision makers never have to deal with this kind of pain. Or maybe that would be a good learning experience for them all.REPORT COMMENTS

The CDC has overstepped their authority and are are undoubtedly causing increased pain and suffering for many chronic pain patients. Obviously all other treatments and non opiate medications should be attempted before long term opiates are prescribed under a pain management program. Doctors are no longer treating patients. They are simply responding to the CDC guidelines. I predict many fold increase in suicide as well as illegal unsupervised street drugs to deal with pain control. Suicide due to uncontrolled pain already outpaces drug deaths from accidental overdose. Once again a government agency throwing their weight around and stacked their "experts " to get the guidelines they wanted. Real chronic pain patients will be left to suffer as doctors will decrease or stop necessary medication for chronic pain patients. Disability claims will be filed by those who could work with adequate pain relief. Good medical doctors and pain management programs already have tools in place to spot potential opiate abusers. God help those who truly suffer.REPORT COMMENTS

I have been horrified to see the results of the pressure on doctors to stop prescribing pain medications. The pain community has seen more overdoses and suicides in the past weeks as chronic pain patients either turn to a drug dealer to alleviate their suffering, or take their own life because they can't stand to live in intractable pain. Was this the intention when these guidelines were handed down? At what point will the government realize that by threatening doctors and pharmacists with losing their licenses, they threw chronic pain patients under the proverbial bus. What will it take for the government to make a clear distinction between chronic pain patients and drug-seeking addicts? Please, address the situation and stop the craziness. Opioids are, and have always been for thousands of years, the most safest and most effective treatment for many types of pain. Demonizing a medication is NOT the answer for the problem of addicts, who will abuse ANY medication or substance available. If you want to address the problem, get heroin off the streets and offer effective treatment programs for addicts.REPORT COMMENTS
