I have arthritis and so far do fine with aspirin, but I know the day will come when I will need more. I understand the perils of addiction and overdose, but it seems like our government doesn't understand the perils of undertreatment. People deserve a decent quality of life. Textbooks say to titrate to effectiveness, but doctors are afraid to use that much. The government needs to get their noses out of doctors' offices, as long as doctors are seeing patients in their offices and monitoring them adequately. -

I started my life of pain in 1967 with the now familiar concussion. The army gave me a 4F when my peers were being shipped to Vietnam. That was only the beginning of a lifetime of spinal and brain injuries. No I am not on disability. I have lost everything except the love and care of my wife. If I loose my only ability to try and maintain my pain I just hope my life will end soon thereafter even though being w/o my wife is almost unbearable. But the suffering she would have to endure and the loss of quality of life it may be my last chance to think of someone other than myself.REPORT COMMENTS

Everyone here, making comments, thinks their congressman is going to read these comments and act on them. They are sorely mistaken. This is a blog and nothing more. The legal assistant will sift this stuff and send you a canned response, as if they care. It's BS, of course. Has anyone seen a change nationwide in regards to this new gestapo DEA ruling? No, and you're not likely to, either. Elephants will sprout wings and fly, first. Ordinary Americans will have to take matters into their own hands...interpret that for yourself. People are resourceful, for good or for bad. Desperate times necessitate desperate measures. DEA, FDA, federal government, what's the difference, none of them care about this issue! The new congress is comfortably in office and they could care less about people who are suffering due to the current gestapo DEA/FDA ruling. When "could" this issue matter? When the president and congress neuter the DEA and/or disband it altogether. The power of this small cabal is like that of the secret police during the era of the Nazis in Germany. But, the government does not care about you or me, unless they need our vote for something they wish to pass. I no longer vote. No real change takes place through the established channels. I have seen this and experienced this as a voter since Carter and Ray-gun were head to head over the presidency. I trust nobody in government any longer. The crooks are always in charge and the real people who could effect change, the people best suited to do the country good, don't run for office because power corrupts. Anyway, I am about to undergo a third back surgery and thank goodness it is not an extensive one, so my post-op pain won't be as bad or as nagging. These posts really ought to go to an ACLU lawyer, where at least something might get started. No "official" government lawyer would give you the time of day on this one....they all spout the party line. Well, I hope to God something gets done. An outside miracle? Change of regime? A second American revolution? Who knows. The government is not going to change on its own, and don't think that voters will have any say on that through proper channels. A ground floor, grass roots, movement is the only way. The ACLU must get involved too. They at least get heard and carry some weight. As in 1930's Nazi Germany, what is considered criminal(to us) becomes law. The Nazi's turned human rights on its head, just as our government(passive) and the DEA (active) are doing at the current moment. Good luck to us all. I will say a prayer and send positive energy, because that is more than our congress will do.REPORT COMMENTS

Dear People, perhaps you have no idea who you're pleading to here, if your doctor still has a job then his spine has already been effectively removed, your congressman knows the deal all too well and is deeply in the pocket, and the DEA who are enforcing this sincerely ENJOYS YOUR SUFFERING. If you're not going down to your corner smack dealer and getting your "prescription" (preferably in needle form) then you can go right ahead and die. Straight up, your money needs to go through their underground emissaries and directly into their pockets. Fast and Furiously. (which BTW was our old mexican guns for smack program. what? you didn't think we were just giving those guns away to cartels did ya? lol) The sweetest thing to them is if by any luck they ever catch you engaged in their business then they get to take you in to meet all their other business partners, you know, the judges and lawyers and prison guards etc all there to give you a wonderful stay and a hefty long term bill to boot. Please keep in mind that these are the effects of what more than sometimes happens when a doctor pushes a patient out his door and into the street in severe pain. I cannot help but resent and look down on as ignorant and or corrupt any doctor who can do such a thing to a patient in need. The DEA jackbooted thugs and all their ilk need to be removed from our peaceful co-existence, as they exist directly in opposition to what Freedom, Liberty and Independence represent. I took an oath twice in my lifetime to defend the constitution, once as a boy scout and later as a solider, and I have determined in all fairness that a War On Drugs is an attack directed against my precious freedom and has been used incrementally to infringe on all our privacies. Without a war on drugs when did the cops ever have any power or right to come sweeping through your house, shoot your dog and take your guns? Bottom line is Legalize ALL forms of drugs, it is the only true solution, and if you don't agree with what i'm saying here you need to ask yourself a very simple seeming question - Why do you think drugs are illegal? Moreover, would your doctor, as well as law enforcement, function more efficiently if all drugs were legal? Would less die or suffer? Treat addiction as a medical problem instead of a legal problem and the answer is actually quite simple.REPORT COMMENTS

I am a 40 year old, devoted mother of 2 beautiful little girls. I have had my shares of ups and downs with Multiple Sclerosis. This is an awful disease, and it has left me paralyzed more than a few times. I am in constant pain, of the spine, feet, muscular and skeletal pain. Pain I can't even find a description for, even after having it for 15 year. In Tennessee you are treated awful for having chronic pain, like a criminal and drug seeker. Degrading. I've only had to be on Oxycodone (the only thing that works for me) twice, off and on for 4 years, while my MS was flared. I couldn't walk, work, and barely get out of bed. It was during this last relapse that left me paralyzed that was shocked that my dr would not prescribe my pain med. She always prescribed what works, when I needed it. a few months here,,a few without,,just when things got so bad I couldn't function. This last time,s he sent me to a pain management clinic, and I complied, urine test..being treated horrible, and I left every 30 days with my 5 year daughter, in tears!! from being treated so awful. Pharmacy would say they were out of stock and I just gave up and went without. I've tried Lyrica, because my primary dr would prescribe that, but it was a hell drug! safer than my 5mg of oxycodone??I don't think so..but I was sick of jumping through hoops for minimal amounts of what works! yes, 5mg of oxycodone. was all I take for a life long disease, and I am treated like this. There are other far worse off than I, and for that I am SO very sad. Cancer patients, war vets, elderly :( my heart breaks for all the innocent casualties of this drug warREPORT COMMENTS

I had written before but all that I get is generated email from our Legislatures & you can't respond back. This new pain medication law is discrimination of the disabled and chronic pain suffers only. Go in every month to the Dr. to get a medication that takes the bite out of severe pain suffers. No one else that are on medication has to report to the dr. once a month for other medications. Probationers have to report to their Officers once a month and are given drug tests...is that what this country is coming to? Law abiding citizens treated like criminals but we are charged for this. Our insurance companies are probably gearing up to up our rates because of this. Who is benefiting from this law? If DEA can't do their jobs, then shame on them. But this law needs to be repealed and shut down regardless.REPORT COMMENTS

Also, many pain management doctors and clinics come up with and make their own rules, which further adds to not only the physical pain the patients are already experiencing, but creates emotional and financial pain, abuses and burdens;plus note that many of these patients also lack the "ways and means: to get not only try to get help for their pain and other misc symptoms, but also do not have transportation to and from these doctors and clinics. A pain management center I've been going to for the past 3 1/2 yrs now,has a big sheet of paper with rules that their patients must follow,or they will discharge and/or fire the patients from their care. One of the rules that bothers me most is one which to me is a form of "Medical Blackmail";it states that if their patients do not comply with treatments, other drugs, medical "VNS" trials and so forth, that they will stop seeing the patient, discharge them from the PM Dr. and clinic's care, plus will stop prescribing their patients the narcotic pain medications, which these patients have become dependent on(or medically addicted to) and need for their ongoing chronic pain. Many dr's and Pain management clinics even discharge their patients for things as simple as having to miss an appoinmtment ,because the patient was sick, didn't have transportation and misc other ligitamit things, that were and are beyond the patients control ,nor the patients fault really. So many patients have been unfairly discharged or fired by their pain management doctors and clinics, without even given a chance to be weaned off the narcotic drugs and without any type of counseling;thus they're sent off and out into the streets and back to their homes having to go off their narcotic medications "Cold turkey" and go through the horrific experience of narcotic "withdrawl" !!! This should be illegal for these dr's and clinics to do,as well as many other rules and practices they place upon already sick and many poor patients. Thus, you can see where the pain managment centers and doctors ( and the fear and influence of DEA),continue to be a major "part of the narcotic drug problem' and not a big " part of the solution",as they pretend to be;as a good percentage of these "thrown away patients",whom were trying to follow the right rules and ect.,are now going out into the streets buying anything from narcotics to heroin,so as not to have to keep going through the withdrawl they are experiencing, due to unfair practices by pain management doctors and clinics. These type of poor, many disabled, "thrown away patients" can become homeless, due to having to buy street drugs, some without health insurance that will cover their medications, doctors whom refuse to help,Pain management doctors and centers that in the end, often do more harm to their patients, than good. There are so many ,problems that arise from all these mentioned things and many more unmentioned issues and problems within the DEA,FDA,Pain Management doctors and clinics andREPORT COMMENTS

I have chronic pain from a work related spine injury in 2006, I have been on pain meds since day 1 and now my doctor refuses to continue seeing me much less getting meds and told me to find another doctor. I've seen 2 others and they don't prescribe pain meds for long term pain and sent me on my way. Whats left? illegal drugs which will kill me or alcohol in amounts that will kill me but just take longer? I know I can't live much less function with the pain I'm in without meds. I already take so much over the counter meds that are more dangerous to my organs than what I was getting from my Doctor for the past 8 years.REPORT COMMENTS
