Legitimate Chronic Pain Patients are Collateral Damage in the DEA's very misguided "War on Drugs"! I had always heard horror stories with regard to patients being unable to procure the appropriate pain management medication from their physicians but I never, in a million years, saw myself in that position. Until I moved to Rochester, NY in 2013, I had wonderful physicians who treated me appropriately so that I was actually able to live life; now, I am simply existing. I have had Rheumatoid Arthritis since I was two years old. I have had several operations including a bilateral total knee replacement in 2008. In addition to the "typical RA pain", I have cervical and lumbar spine issues, bilateral hip pain and, beginning in 2014, mysterious painful bilateral calf pain. Obviously, I have an extensive medical record accompanied by several x-rays, MRIs and CT scans to corroborate my claims. Up until 2013, I enjoyed a successful corporate career, put myself through school twice for the completion of two degrees, volunteered, became a certified personal trainer in order to help others like myself, participated in various athletic events such as swimming the Hudson River and enjoyed a healthy social life. Rochester is known for allegedly having "world class" health care. My experience has been far from it; I have encountered physicians that are arrogant, lazy and quite complacent. Upon seeing the level of opiates that I was prescribed at that time, one physician stated that he "needed to make certain that I was not taking one and selling the other"! I had NEVER been spoken to in such a fashion; to put it bluntly, I wanted to punch him. Had he not been the physician of an acquaintance, I would have lodged a complaint. Long story short; I was eventually mandated to a "pain management" clinic whereupon the doctor immediately put me on a weaning schedule. I begged her to promise to not leave me in pain, to which she complied. Now, I did ask whether or not she had viewed my medical record; she stated she did. I knew that was a blatant lie as my records had not yet been transferred. For six months, every two weeks, I had to submit to a urine/blood test and was decreased further in medication. I was in agony as my pain levels increased, obviously, as the medication was decreased. I lay on my sofa daily simply crying and screaming (out of pain and anger) at times. I thought that this was it; my life was over. I contemplated suicide even though I am typically a very emotionally and physically strong individual. I got to the point where I could not take it anymore and filed a formal complaint with the affiliated hospital. At my next appointment, the "pain management" doctor concluded that this was not the right time in my life to completely take me off pain medication and I was discharged. I left the accompanying primary care physician as she was the one who originally mandated me to the "pain management clinic" and watched me suffer

I have had acute and chronic Crohn's disease since my mid twenties, after a wonderfully healthy life. I am now 57. After my rectum/anus and colon were removed in 1999, I developed severe and unceasing pain of the pudendal nerve. I have had nerve blocks without success and pudendal release surgery which did nothing good. My pain is not livable or controllable without a medium high dose of methadone around the clock on a schedule. I still suffer but at a level where I can function and seem normal. I am an extremely ambitious artist and because I can still get methadone at a high enough dosage, I can function nearly normally. This is now being threatened because doctors are becoming the targets of trumped up fears of an ill informed public. Without ample pain medication, I would be forced to suffer at a level which would mean certain suicide. I am stating a cold hard truth, not being melodramatic. My particular nerve pain is not tolerable and not stoppable. Fear-mongering and uninformed moralism must not be allowed to continue to cloud reason. People in pain must have access to help, not treated with suspicion. We should err on the side of treating complaints of suffering. We in chronic pain, live in constant fear of being stripped of life saving drugs: Chronic pain degrades a person's health and can lead to self inflicted death. Ignorance and inhumanity in the guise of public safety must be stopped. Only empathetic doctors should make these decisions with their patients. The media gives credence to meditation, yoga, acupuncture and pot as alternative and equally effective pain solutions ignoring all evidence. At this juncture opiates are the ONLY true pain deterrent we have. The fact is that there will always be abusers of drugs. They also need help but not at the expense of protocol following pain patients. They should also be treated with empathy. However: Not one pain sufferer should fall by the wayside. Period. If you will notice, when pain medication is restricted, people immediately go buy heroin.Pain patients are the losers because they end up with nothing. Restriction is not a solution. The media is largely culpable for inflaming the public. By the way they tell it, there are actually no real pain patients since as we all know- pain is really under one's own control. You will observe that when opiate use is reported on, only the number deaths are mentioned- the opposing statistics such as how many people are not being helped and how the abuse relative to population is quite small are not mentioned. When the media reports on deaths due to car accidents, they do it so in relation to actual population. It can be said without hyperbole that the media never gives a fair voice to expert pain clinicians or to those who suffer-yet live life fully with opiate use. They only give air time to weeping parents of addicted children or pain patients who appear dubious. The fact is that opiates do very little harm to

I take my meds responsibly . People that show a true record of pain sudden be the target. If you take away what works for me i can't work no longer and feed my family. If you were only in my boots and feel this body of mine .

Please even if you are not a suffering Long Term Chronic Pain Sufferers yet if you know one, sign this petition. It is critical that the rules are changed for those of us that have Chronic Pain Issues. We want nothing more than to be treated as human beings that have been affected with a Chronic Illnesses. We are not illicit drug seekers. We are seeking effective care from our Pain Management Doctors. The FDA and DEA have instilled fear of writing prescriptions that will help us live as pain free as possible. We would feel more like human beings able to involve ourselves in activities instead of withdrawing in our suffering. I can attest to the above because I have been afflicted with Chronic Pain Disease, it has taken so much of my life abilities. Above all the Hipocratic Oath "do no harm " has been abolished by the DEA and FDA. That is a crime! Thank you for your support!

I'm Native American and live on a reservation....We were promised medical care, dental and vision by the United States government because we are wards of the government....POW's to this very moment....We have clinics that are supposed to provide us these things....Many of us live in constant pain for one reason or another....I was born with bad knees n should have had surgery....Bad knees and backs run in my family really badly....By the time I was 17 I was in pain most of the time.....By 18 I was put on pain meds....At 19 I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia, back then it wasnt common....I got doctors telling me it was all in my head, I was depressed, there was nothing wrong n that I just wanted attention....Once I was finally put on pain meds I was constantly labeled, treated unfairly n told I was an addict...I've been with my doctor for 11 years now n it's a battle at every appointment....I have ruptured disc's in my back, spinal stenosis, disc disease, sciatica, nerve damage n my knees n hips hurt....I also have arthritis....I'm Only 30 so my age is always a huge issue with doctors....Lately the clinic has been cutting ppl, legitimate patients off there pain meds...They sent out letters stating that there's an epidemic of abuse of pain meds in the community and they feel that the way to elevate this is to start cutting down the amount of pain pills being distributed out to patients....The clinic isn't designed to be a pain clinic and the amount of pills coming out of the clinic is alarming....So basically it doesn't matter if ur a legitimate chronic pain patient...Everyone has to suffer now because the clinic and it's doctors weren't wining out the addicts n drug seekers....They were over prescribing meds to ppl who didn't need them n got ppl to the point that the community is now an epidemic of overdoses and ppl hooked on opiates that never should have been prescribed these meds in the first place...No one's gunna admit that tho...They rather blame it on the patients, punish the patients that actually have a better quality of life with these meds n take them properly....Why is it our fault?....Isn't this creating a new problem?....

I have suffered from this. I am disabled due to spinal injuries. I go through VA to get my medications. The last two physicians have lowered my pain medications without even consulting me. I have just unfairly treated and suffered because of this. By reducing my pain medications they have severely reduced my activities. The future will show how much effect that will have on me but I do not think it will help my health.

I am LIVING A LIFE OF ABSOLUTE HELL! I cannot find a doctor to help me. I have had back/neck problems since I was 18yrs old. Now, 37yrs old, I will give the short version, i have a degeneration of disc disease throughout my WHOLE SPINE, severe spinal stenosis, my WHOLE spine is mostly herniated hitting my nerves but bulged as well, severe sciatica, oh had lumbar surgery in 09' but now is ruined, arthritis in back, bursitis in BOTH HIPS, bursitis in shoulder with tear in rotator cuff and bone spurs, fibromyalgia & Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (confirmed by a rheumatologist, not just any Joe Shmoe)....the list can go on but I will save u that. I have a medical record as thick as one of those older looking Bibles! I have had a doctor (remember they take an Oath) that basically said I'm crazy telling me he believs Im having what is called a "nervous breakdown!" He was happy to want to write a script for that, though. I've had a doctor tell me to lose weight n that's my problem FOR EVERYTHING. FUNNY, it was only due to my fibromyalgia AND spine problems that has caused me to get this way. I was unable to workout for 2 hrs a day anymore like before. WISH I COULD DOCTOR! He also gave me a STANDARD folder given to EVERY PATIENT HE SAW THAT DAY. I know this because I saw patients leave with it that included "His special DIET!" Wonder if he read Cameron Diaz Book along with some ATKINS! ALL he did does in his office is ONE PROCEDURE which I've already had done in past, didn't work for me. NO MEDS UNLESS I had procedure by him n it was just to go home after PERFORMED procedure. I have HAD a doctor lie about me in my medical record! I was seen at this office prior to my back surgery at the Mayo Clinic so now I needed follow up pain doctor for future, along with MY MANY OTHER PROBLEMS That I Have SKELATAL AND NON. At that time I was taking ONE Percocet 10mg A DAY. I had a 4 month baby at that time with me, but have a house, family, etc thst im responsible for so, I would use that ONE pill to start my day off and literally SUFFER FOR MANY HOURS until it was the next morning. Long story short, I was there with my 4m old. Couldn't see my old doctor there, he moved out of town. This sorry excuse for a doctor, I'm ALLOWED to have my OPINION BTW, NEVER ONCE looked me in the face, already knew I had the surgery and then asked me if I had physical therapy, shots whatever. I said I've already done all of that. So, he had the NERVE to ask me so ignorant and condescendingly, WHAT I WANTED HIM TO DO ABOUT IT because HE IS A MUSCLE SKELATAL pain doctor. I told him that I know that, that's why I'm here for my SKELATAL problems! As stated I have many SKELATAL PROBLEMS!! I then answered saying that I DIDN'T KNOW WHAT TO DO, he is the doctor. Ps.....I wasn't being a "B" either, I was in utter shock and disbelief! I wasn't looking for a fight I was looking for some HELP!!! He proceeds to ACCUSE ME of just WANTING PAIN MEDS AND I SHOULD GO BACK TO THE MAYO CLINIC, got up shuffling

I have not left my house I vomit all day , is there anything I can do. I am not a pill user but in this case I would do anything to alleviate this horrendous pain...

I want an answer to a question. Is this whole thing the first step in legalizing marijuana and turning it into the only option for chronic pain sufferers? It certainly appears to be the first step in the DEA supporting a move to what is now being touted as the wonder drug. Non addicting pain relieve, cancer relief, the ability for cancer patients to eat all great reasons to legalize it. However what do you do with the millions of individuals in jail for this soon to be legal wonder drug? These individuals deserve their freedom if this is the plan and I highly suspect it is. I suspect there are agendas in play here that have more to do with rewarding those drug companies who now hold patents on the new wonder strains. I don't want to accuse anyone of turning a blind eye to those drug companies who donated to the campaigns of many politicians but I am tired of seeing this sort of "public service" Turning a blind eye to the actions taken by the DEA may help some but not all your constituents. Don't get me wrong here I believe legalizing a medicine that helps millions without causing addiction is a fantastic answer. However, there are people who are unable to use this wonder drug there will always be individuals who are allergic or have adverse reactions. So if this is a push to legalize what I understand is working wonders for people then say it. Just remember there are those who suffer from headaches, and have adverse reactions due to allergies just from the smell of it. I don't use it and not just because I'm a law abiding citizen or that it's still illegal in Tennessee. I can't be in a room where it is present I immediately get a migraine just from the odor I personally could never use this new miracle medication because just being near it makes me violently ill. It worked great when I was helping troubled kids because I knew if they had any on them but I paid for the gift with debilitating headaches and nausea. i know I can't be the only person with this issue so if this is where America is headed what happens to people like me?

We the people have a right to pain relief in the pursuit of happiness. This is oppression. People not in pain making decisions for the ones who are in pain. Just like the people who supported slavery were free and the ones who support abortion are born. The government needs to stand down before the people take matters into their own hands. All these people who actually need pain medication are going to end up on disability or homeless because they can't work. Oh wait...this sounds like another ploy by the government to destroy our economy.

ACCORDING TO THE VERY SAME PEOPLE WHO ARE RIPPING AWAY LIFE SAVING MEDICATIONS THEIR STATISTIC SHOW, AND I QUOTE RIGHT OFF THE CDC WEBSITE: "Drinking too much can harm your health. Excessive alcohol use led to approximately 88,000 deaths and 2.5 million years of potential life lost (YPLL) each year in the United States from 2006 ? 2010, shortening the lives of those who died by an average of 30 years.1,2 Further, excessive drinking was responsible for 1 in 10 deaths among working-age adults aged 20-64 years. The economic costs of excessive alcohol consumption in 2010 were estimated at $249 billion, or $2.05 a drink.3," MORE THAN DOUBLE THAT OF YOUR FALSIFIED PRESCRIPTION PILL DEATH RATE, NOW FOR TOBACCO RIGHT OFF THE CDC WEBSITE AND I QUOTE ! " More than 480,000 deaths annually (including deaths from secondhand smoke) 278,544 deaths annually among men (including deaths from secondhand smoke) 201,773 deaths annually among women (including deaths from secondhand smoke) MORE THAN 480,000 PEOPLE HAVE DIED FROM TOBACCO USE EACH YEAR !!! NOW FOR THE PRESCRIPTION PILL OVERDOSE RATE AND I QUOTE FROM THE CDC WEBSITE: "There were 43,982 drug overdose deaths in the United States in 2013. Of these, 22,767 (51.8%) were related to prescription drugs.1 WOW NOWHERE NEAR WHAT THE DEATH RATE OF ALCOHOL AND TOBACCO IS IT?!?! OF THOSE 43,000 DEATHS, ,JUST HOW MANY WERE RELATED TO THE PEOPLE WHO WERE BEING FORCED TO LIVE IN AGONY?!?! HOW MANY TOOK THEIR OWN LIVES BECAUSE OUR GOVERNMENT FORCED THEM TOO?!?! AMONG THAT RATE JUST HOW MANY DEATHS WERE WHEN THE PILLS WERE TAKEN WITH ALCOHOL?!?! WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON HERE?!?! WHY THE HELL AM I BEING FORCED TO SUFFER IN AGONY EVERY GOD DAM DAY OF MY LIFE WHEN THERE IS MEDICATION THAT WORKS AND HAS HELPED ME FOR MANY YEARS TO EASE MY SUFFERING AND GAVE ME SOME QUALITY OF LIFE?!?! WHY THE **** AM I, AND THOUSANDS UPON THOUSANDS ACROSS THIS COUNTRY BEING MADE TO FEEL LIKE ADDICTS AND PILL SEEKERS, JUNKIES AND CRIMINALS WHEN WE FOLLOW THE RULES AND JUST WANT TO EASE OUR SUFFERING?!?!
