My doctor wrote me a note & I was able to take my enzymes without a problem. My school had the note on file in the office. The only time I had issues is when a teacher was new or a sub and didnt understand my situation. My school was also very small, so that helped. However, in order for all this to happen, my parents had to fight with the board of education. It took a while, but it got done. Plus I refused to hand over my medicines. I was written up one time because of it, but I told them of my note on file, they looked it up and dismissed it. My school didn't have a nurse on staff every day. She would be there 2-3 times a week. It would have made it impossible to get my meds if I had to depend on that.Jul 24th, 2010Someone from Lubbock, TX writes:
My daughter just didn't take her enzymes at school because it was such a hassel to go to office before going to lunch. We dealt with the consequences each day.REPORT COMMENTS

There is too many children that already fall through the cracks of our school system. Children that have a learning or physical disability have been consider throw away children.Just because there is a disability in someone life does not mean they can not be a blessing to our sociallity. It is wrong to help some and not all. there are many who can not read but they work. have one limb and have a wonderful life and job. why cant people see we are helping other countries and thier people and letting down our own.REPORT COMMENTS

It is important to teach children to be responsible for their own care. Especially if the child is in middle school/High School. It becomes a hassle and many children at this age would opt to not take the medication at all. In an effort to teach our children to care for themselves and to make sure parents can still work to support their family, this law needs to be changed.REPORT COMMENTS

I had to go to the nurse starting middle school. By high school I hid the fact but if I was caught I am sure it would have been bad. Making kids who take an important but really harmless drug in the nurses office is very unessesary. I hope the law can be looked at and changed.REPORT COMMENTS

I always had to either leave class early or miss the beginning of lunch in order to go to the nurse at school and take my enzymes. It was such a pain! Thankfully, I always had wonderful school nurses so it wasn't too awful bad.REPORT COMMENTS

My son is 3 and can administer his own enzymes! I am sure that most CF patients can do this by themselves.REPORT COMMENTS

I believe this should be restricted to certain age limits. say 15 and over. Some of the younger kids may not be as responsible with keeping their medications under wraps or in a non-visable place and other young students may try to take them with ignorance clouding their judgement.REPORT COMMENTS

My son has CF and I am a newly graduated nurse who begins school nursing this fall. We allow children to carry their insulin and encourage medication in the classroom so the children do not miss class and they are not separated from their peers. My son's enzymes are in his classroom, when he's a bit older and able to remember to take them, he too will carry them with him. It encourages responsibility and independence, as well as acceptance from their peers.REPORT COMMENTS
