My own son - who does not have CF - also takes digestive enzymes before lunch per advice from his nutritionist. He is only in 1st grade but is quite capable of administering them himself - which he did in summer camp. Please remove this unnecessary restriction!Aug 18th, 2010Someone from Watsonville, CA signed.

If a child is competent, there is no reason that they should not be able to administer themselves a simple enzyme. This is stigmatizing and demoralizing for the student, especially as they get older. We are reinforcing that they are not in control of any part of their health or their body, which is wrong.REPORT COMMENTS

While pancreatic enzymes are prescribed medications, they are simply harmless enzymes that are produced in the pancreas for fat absorption, Unfortunately, the pancreas doesn't function properly in those with CF; therefore they must take enzyme supplements with EVERY meal. Having to go to the nurse's office to take enzymes several times a day may discourage a kid from going to the nurse's office because of the stigma involved. As long as they can demonstrate competence, kids with CF should be allowed to carry and administer their own enzymes. Let's empower CFers to make good, healthy choices and have as normal a life as possible! --Mom of a 3 year old with CFREPORT COMMENTS

Peanut Butter is more of a threat to someone with a severe alergy like my nephew has. It is still allowed in quite a few schools.REPORT COMMENTS

My daughter Abigail attends the Wheaton RIII school in Wheaton Missouri and we would love for her to be able to administer them herself. She spends a lot of time running over to the nurse, and albeit she is a wonderful nurse, Abbey would feel better about herself if she did not have to be so different from the other 3rd graders.REPORT COMMENTS

My 6 year old has CF and I fullu support and completely agree with this action. Kids with CF are taking multiple pills from birth and most by school age are very much capable of independently taking pancreatic enzymes with meals given that they have done it 3-5 x daily since birth. I am also a nurse and have worked as a school nurse in the past and do find that CF kids are very much capable to have this responsibility and it is needless to single them out @ mealtimes or during class parties to leave the class, often times causing them to miss out on important socialization with their peers and needlessly ostricising them Thank you for your understanding, Traci SchwyzerREPORT COMMENTS
