Horses are companion animals, and work animals. They were never intended to be food animals. Stop the slaughter.

So long as this act is not passed, my horses are in danger of theft and a horrible death. Americans do not favor eating horsemeat, nor do they favor slaughter. Get something right done in Washington and stop caving to special interests in favor of what real people really want.

There is NO way to EVER make slaughter HUMANE. There is NO way I would ever eat horsemeat. It's not even in pet food anymore and is not safe to consume. The slaughter and transport needs to stop NOW!!! Slaughter is a disgrace and we would be poisoning other people. Money should not be an issue here when you are talking about lives at stake. Get out of thinking backwards. Save lives and the horses and GET THIS BILL PASSED NOW!!! The proslaughter people just want to keep over producing and taking tax breaks on this practice. This would be an unfairness and disturb the balance in the equine industry, increase horse thefts and destroy cities by imposing costs to support plant needs, degrade social status and increase crime, not to mention the health concerns that would arise.

We emitted a huge hue and cry when China sent tainted food products to our shores. Knowing that horse meat is tainted with many drugs not allowed in food intended animals are we now no better? When a child dies in Europe from a disease related to toxins in horse meat will we just look the other way and call the PR department? Shame on America that we allow this still.

There are so many people out there that have these animals as pets. I can't believe that our government would let certain people take them to another country for food, knowing that they are going to make someone, somewhere, sick. Let's look beyond the allmighty dollar for once and concentrate on lives. We as a people are so intent on making money, that we forget to look at the lives of animals,as well as human beings. Horses in the U.S. should be thought of as an animal that has helped us make this nation what it is today, not as food for someone, or dollars in pockets. These intelligent, beautiful, worthy creatures helped in all of our wars, brought us into terrain that would be unexplored if not for them, and now is a companion that, if you are a horse lover, is like no other. Please pass this bill, so that our children, and their children's children, and so on, can enjoy their beauty and grace. Think of it this way, how would you feel if horses did not exist now? Granted, you wouldn't know what your missing if you never heard of them, but they will remain in our history forever.

The United States has no right sending animals given BANNED drugs over both borders to be slaughtered for human consumption. Horse slaughter is also inhumane. Our study proved that horses given banned drugs are being slaughtered for human consumption. End the transportation of horses over the borders for slaughter for human consumption NOW.

Please stop this barbaric abuse. Do not be fooled by the pro-slaughter lobby, their solution to their "puppy mill" over breeding, is to kill want they no longer want. We are better human beings then this.

American horses should not be sent to slaughter under any conditions as all. 'Bute' is toxic for people so why would you want your pets consuming it? So, by saving horses lives, you also save people & your dogs and cats from ingesting cancer causing substances.

I want to thank my astute legislators for supporting the end of this barbaric industry. Horse slaughter causes brutal suffering to equines, whether it?s done in the U.S., Mexico or Canada. From auction to transport to feedlot ? to the ineffective stunning from the kill process itself, the horse slaughter pipeline routinely subjects equines to prolonged stress and abusive conditions, as well as injury, sickness, and lack of mandated food, water or medical treatment. Factory processing of horses cannot be made to be humane, and for transport to be made humane would require regulatory changes; incur increased costs to both transporters and slaughterhouses, and would necessitate significant funding increases for USDA oversight ? all for toxic meat we don?t even consume in the U.S., and the profits from which go overseas. The availability of horse slaughter also provides incentive for irresponsible breeding of equines, creating a situation of excess horses, and increased rates of equine neglect. In addition, we have seen some increases in abandoned horses by owners afraid to send their horses to auction for fear of them selling to slaughter. By all measures, the current allowance of sale of horses to slaughter in the U.S. is detrimental to equine welfare. And when slaughter plants were open in Texas and Illinois, the situation was no better, as evidenced by reports and pictures from the USDA. We need to end this industry that hurts our horses; damages our equine industry; and causes harm to the communities who are home to the plants. Please act now to pass S. 1176 and any companion bills in the House of Representatives.

Starting up the horse slaughter industry does not generate any significant job growth. In addition, it makes no sense to have food processing plants for food people in the US just won't eat. Lastly, animals raised as pets, and that's what horses are, no matter how people try to reframe the discussion, were never meant to be a food source.

The American public has expressed its opinion time and again against this practice. But, there was a loophole that backfired and now horses are treated more brutally than ever. I STRONGLY OPPOSE THE SLAUGHTER OF AMERICAN HORSES FOR CONSUMPTION.
