Cattle ranchers are worthless dirtbags. All of them should be stood up against a wall and shot. Stop letting them dictate the way public lands are managed.

No reason for this...just another way humans can torture animals for profit. For once maybe we can be compassionate and merciful stewards of our planet.

The wild horse is an American Icon. Why are they being transported to Mexico and Canada to die a horrible agonizing death. There are no "Unwanted" horses. We have sanctuary for them. They are not something to eat. Havent people got enough animals to eat without horses. You'll be eating our dogs next!!

As a Kentuckian and a true lover of horses, I cannot even think about horse slaughter. It is SO cruel and SO unneccessary. Horses should be treated like the special creatures that they are.

?Animals are God?s creatures. He surrounds them with his providential care. By their mere existence they bless him and give him glory. Thus men owe them kindness. We should recall the gentleness with which saints like St. Francis of Assisi or St. Philip Neri treated animals.??Catechism of the Catholic Church ?Animals are God's creatures, not human property, nor utilities, nor resources, nor commodities, but precious beings in God's sight?Christians whose eyes are fixed on the awfulness of crucifixion are in a special position to understand the awfulness of innocent suffering. The Cross of Christ is God's absolute identification with the weak, the powerless, and the vulnerable, but most of all with unprotected, undefended, innocent suffering.?? Reverend Andrew Linzey ?Animals have done us no harm and they have no power of resistance.?There is something so very dreadful?in tormenting those who have never harmed us, who cannot defend themselves, who are utterly in our power.??Cardinal John Henry Newman

I don?t see this as an animal rights issue or even a property rights issue, but more of a food safety issue. We are so close to getting a huge black eye on our meat production industry. I would hate to see that happen again. It took us years to recover from mad cow, and that was for a disease that could be controlled with proper practices. Now we are looking at a system that allows animals with false documents and banned drugs in their system, to become dinner for someone in another country. Reminds me of China supplying a counterfeit ingredient for baby formula that caused infant deaths. When we had horse slaughter in this country we had foreign companies running the plants. They were some pretty shady companies that didn't mind breaking the law and never worried about paying their fines for polluting the communities where they resided. They did pretty much as they pleased including killing any horse that was brought to them without any documentation on the horse's history as to health or drugs. We didn't have a segment of breeders raising horses as food animals and selling them directly to slaughter to fill that market. Rather we had "kill buyers" buying horses at auction to deliver to the plant. Anything that sold cheap enough would go to slaughter, and most of the meat went to Europe. Europe has been using horse meat for decades. There are breeders there who raise horses as meat animals and take care to make sure they handle them as food animals. Some riding horses go to slaughter in Europe, but only ones that have a complete medical and drug history from birth on, and qualify for slaughter based on that history. Most horses in Europe have a "passport" issued when they are born. It is a small booklet that starts with his registration papers and has a place for recording his complete history signed off on by vets, farriers, trainers etc. Owners keep these books up to date, because a quick review will show a prospective buyer how well a horse has been cared for. Europeans have trusted that their horse meat supply was safe because they assumed imported meat met the same standards as their home raised meat. Now they realize that hasn't been the case. I don?t think they had a clue where American horse meat come from until our plants closed and a vocal minority started complaining they had no place to dump their unwanted horses. Now EU is inspecting Canadian and Mexican plants to make sure horses have proper documentation and meet their standards. For a while they are accepting an affidavit from the seller that the horses meet their drug standards of six months drug free and lifetime free of certain unacceptable drugs. Kill buyers are forging drug affidavits to sell horses and the EU inspections have caught a couple American horses in Mexico with banned drugs in their system despite their affidavits. By mid 2013 EU will require a passport style full history on any horse to be slaughtered in plants supplying them horse meat. There

If you would watch a horse or donkey being slaughtered you would not hesitate to pass this law. We should do better by our American horses. I am not proud to be an American knowing what we are allowing to happen to them.
