NSF political science funding, while modest, has had an important impact on scholarship on democracy, counter-terrorism, policy implementation, public opinion and a range of research questions important to our country. Research supported by NSF funding also informs our teaching of undergraduate and graduate students, providing data for their research and strengthening their learning, increasing their knowledge, and extending their intellectual abilities. Please restore the original funding for NSF political science research.

NSF funds have been used to show us how to maintain democracy--something we send troops around the world to do. So, really, isn't reliable information about politics extra important in an age of terrorism?

The research produced by NSF funded projects helps to enrich our democracy for what is a very small sum of money. Do not cut it.

NSF funded political science research has given us invaluable information about a range of topics with real and practical applications. Given that the amount of money expended on these programs is so small, cutting them would be a very short-sighted decision.

As a former US Army officer who specialized in analyzing terrorist organizations and counter-insurgency planning, I have on countless occasions utilized information gained from the findings of NSF funded political science research in making my recommendations to the DOD leadership. Based on my personal and professional experiences, I can attest that NSF funded political science research projects are not about some abstract academic discourse, but are about issues that have practical policy implications. Eliminating the political science program from the NSF funding would be one of the biggest mistakes this nation could make as it strives to improve its standing in an increasingly competitive world.

Political scientists do important work to understand human behavior in the political process. Please do not cut this funding.
