The time is now- the U.S. has the opportunity to do the right thing and stand for the rights of indigenous peoples by signing the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. -

A small step forward, a long time coming. I pray that should this be recognized by the United States, that history its long history of denial, sabotage and indiference shall not continue.REPORT COMMENTS

I am Indian, and I've often been mistaken as Indian, not from the Indian Subcontinent, but a Native American. I do not know what is the source of that confusion, what I do know is how it feels to be erased, ignored, swept under the carpet, be ascribed the identity of a "Third Worlder." A (once)native with mystic indigenous qualities which can be tolerated in the name of cultural assimilation but never honored, never understood, never engaged critically with. I know the pain of dispossession and displacement, not quite of the same magnitude as the indigenous people here have suffered over the years. I wholeheartedly support any declaration that has to do with recognizing, honoring and accepting the rights and the history of indigenous peoples, and I hope this initiative would provide both real and symbolic benefits.REPORT COMMENTS
