Ceasing to collect ACS data only eliminates information that plays an important role in policy decisions and understanding of society leaving only ideology and opinions to inform crucial decisions that affect all Americans.May 24th, 2012Someone from Stanford, CA writes:
I use it to help students at Stanford. It's an important source of information that should be preserved.REPORT COMMENTS

The ACS is vital to science, to the distribution of federal funds, and to business. The only reason to not fully fund the ACS is if you want to destroy the federal government's ability to do its job and businesses' ability to use this valuable information. If you'd rather cripple America than help its people, then defund the ACS. THe Republicans will be known as the party that crippled and impoverished America.REPORT COMMENTS

While working I was working with CDC, I used the ACS data nearly every week. It is a valuable, one of a kind tool for viewing current demographic, education, and socio-economic data across the nation. The data on the ACS can be leveraged with health statistics, hospital reported indicators, and other data to examine the make-up of populations who are experiencing gaps in service access, or are experiencing an unusually high number of adverse outcomes. In today's world, with high levels of internal migration due to the rapidly changing work environment, current data on our country's population must be a priority to help plan effective programs and allocate resources appropriately.REPORT COMMENTS

The ACS survey provided an neutral basis for data-based policies of businesses, nonprofits, and governments. Without it, data will be less accessible, less transparent, less agreeable, and less meaningful. The program?s defunding will not serve liberal policy, conservative policy, or centrist policy; only ineffective policy has won.REPORT COMMENTS

After Hurricane Katrina, the ACS gave us important information about disaster recovery and people's ability to return home without waiting until 2011 or 2012 for Census data to be released. It is an important resource to provide short-term information and aid in designing relevant public policy responses.REPORT COMMENTS

Congress has been elected by the population to represent its interests and concerns. How can those interests and concerns be accurately assessed if you continue to cut every means by which the people can express them? We know the difference between fiscal responsbility and political exploitation.REPORT COMMENTS
