This legislation gives me hope that some day in the future, I along with countless other will be free from the oppressive burden of student debt. I am the first in my entire family history to ever graduate from college, now I owe a debt that will follow me to my grave. Bankruptcy is not a choice that everybody will make, but those of us that have no hope of freedom from debt see it as an end to the indentured servitude that is currently our lives. The economy is suffering under the weight of student loan debt. Free from student loan debt, people will be able to buy houses, cars, and make investments. All of this will lead to stronger economic growth.

Student Debt needs the protection of being discharged through Bankruptcy because many of these debts were incurred by banks that set up kickback deals with colleges and universities and were not fairly entered into in the first place. These rotten deals were not punished. Only the student. It's time to make this right.

People in this country can buy houses, cars and run up credit car bills, then when they are unable to pay they're able to declare bankruptcy; however, people who borrow money for a higher education, who for some unfortunate reason becomes unable to repay the loan(s), they have absolutely no legal recourse because they cannot declare bankruptcy for student loans! Where is the justice in that???

I don't mind paying back what I borrowed but I can't afford the CAPITALIZED INTEREST that has and is accruing! Either cap the interest or let us discharge in bankruptcy! How am I supposed to help my kids pay for college when I can't pay off my debt?

I have private student loans held by HESAA NJCLASS loan-a state sponsored program. My loans were defaulted because of HESAA's horrendous servicing department; I made every good faith attempt in paying my loans to no avail and they refuse to allow me to bring the loans current. I now have to file bankruptcy JUST to pay these loans and this is the ONLY debt I have.
