HR 3451 is an extremely important measure. The removal of bankruptcy protections for student loan borrowers was an insidious and unfair tactic that has resulted in furthering the precarity and despair of many of the country's brightest and best educated individuals. 11 USC 523(a)(8) must be repealed in the name of equality, democracy, and decency!

We can discharge most debt incurred by bad decisions. No one questions that. It's long past time we were able to discharge debt incurred by GOOD decisions. We already penalize American students enough with out-of-control college costs. We penalize many Americans further by requiring expensive college courses and degrees for crucial work that is vastly underpaid (see teachers, many caregivers, social workers, police, many physical and mental health providers, etc.). Let's stop penalizing them for being unable to pay back the huge sums they had to borrow just to sneak into the lower-middle class.

loans have already more than doubled and lenders won't work with me to reduce repayment other than stretching out the loan while increasing interest rate

I was trying to improve my life and use my college education to improve my abilities to be a productive member of society. I applied and received grants and scholarships. Student loans were presented like free cotton candy at a fair. Who could resist? As a single mom it seemed the only way to continue being a good mom while in college. I wouldn't have to hold down two jobs on top of full time student status to provide for my daughter and myself. I didn't expect to lose my ability to work at all nor continue college nor was I counseled to plan for such a "what if'. I became fully disabled for life due to severe injuries to back, neck and spine. I had been paying one loan, then deference over and over, then pain took over and even getting more deferences became impossible for me as now I had more student loans on top of the first. I've been in default since. I receive only SSI and see no way ever to pay!! Help, please

Many people aspire to a better life. Do not penalize those who become students to do it.

This is just the tip of the iceberg on dealing with abuses of student loans. Banks need to held responsible for manipulating loans so principle is never paid down and people remain in debt for life. This creates a state of indentured servitude toward the financial industry. This is criminal!
