We have seen it all. The level of animal abuse in our country today is horrific beyond comprehension. I cannot think of any abuse that hasn't been done to animals. The only way that animal abuse could get worse is when, not if, the incidence of abuse rises. Plus, the more horrible the abuse the more horrible people are involved. It isn't a far reach to think someone willing to harm defensless animals would just as easily harm another person or child as well. We must address both issues concurrently in order to save these guiltless animals. I believe that our government has the power to do more than stiffen laws and penalties. Conscience cannot be legislated. I believe that our government by the people, for the people and of the people can and must be proactive rather that reactive. I believe the government has the right and the power to implement ways to influence its people from birth and throughout their lives to live a moral life regardless of their religion or lack thereof. Because of the falling away of many people from religious institutions and because of the struggle to understand separation of church and state, generations of people do not have any moral light whatsoever. Plus we are getting more and more, and therefore also (even) more psychotic creeps. I believe now is the time to implement provision of the moral leadership that our country is painfully missing. Moral corruption is at the crux of our country's descent into atrocities against animals. (I am petitioning separately against all forms of humankind abuse that plagues our country as well). Why not strengthen moral precepts that all people have in common? Could we not fill public schools with lessons on morality? For instance could we not substitute moral subject matter, which would not offend anyone's sensibilities, for subjects now used in children's readers and other school books? Why not integrate things moral into the everyday life of students? Would not students respond well to such surroundings? We all must act against wrong.Mar 30th, 2016Someone from Berkeley, CA signed.

I agree, harsher penalties should be given to those who harm other animals. It isn't a far reach to think someone willing to harm defenseless animals would just as easily harm another person as well. These are violent acts. I'm ok with hunting for sustenance, etc., but not the harming of animals for no (or selfish) reasons.REPORT COMMENTS

I can't believe nonviolent drug offenders are imprisoned, while these violent sadists walk free. A similar comparison can be made with property crime: If someone stole my car, I'd be mad but I'd get another one. If someone killed my pet, I'd be devastated. But which criminal would get the harsher sentence? I think we all know. Animals are not "property." They are sentient. They are family. Our animal cruelty laws are ridiculously outdated and a very far cry from what the majority of Americans want. There has been some progress, but not enough and it has taken too long. Please do something sweeping and decisive to make America a more just and civilized nation.REPORT COMMENTS

Not just cruelty against domestic animals but for animals in factory farms. They should be treated humanely to say the least, since we're taking their lives. Its appalling to see what is done to them. Even if you eat meat, if you respect animals and know that they feel pain, please do something. The undercover videos are horrendous and I can't believe a sophisticated country like ours, could treat animals like this. Think of the saying by Ghandi: "The greatness of a nation can be judged by the way it's animals are treated" If you have a heart, please do what is right. The animals and I implore you!REPORT COMMENTS
