With government spending so much money, it is critical to know how governments actually operate. My NSF funding in Political Science has always attempted to understand how government policies could be improved.

At a time when our government is divided and dysfunctional, how can it possibly make sense to eliminate funding for the only discipline that studies why governmental systems work (or fail to work) the way they do?

Do we really want the public to know and understand less about the political process? I am currently working as a graduate student on a NSF grant working to enhance our understanding of the legislative process. Some may see this as frivolous, but I see it as essential for enhancing our understanding of how our government, and society, works.

I used knowledge gained from NSF-funded political science studies while working on the campaigns for both of my current Senators.

The social science programs at NSF have made transformative contributions to our understanding of civic life. They are the foundation of cutting edge research at our state's top universities. Attacking these programs does nothing to improve efficiency, but will erode our understanding of politics in a democratic society.

As a philosopher who specializes in philosophy of science as well as social and political philosophy, i can say AUTHORITATIVELY that the work of political scientists is critically important to maintaining the integrity of our political process. This is just another example of the "republican war on science" or anything else that might disagree with them. (Note the small "r" in "republican." THESE people (the pee party) are the "republicans in name only"--not the other folks.

This amendment would eliminate thousands of of opportunities for undergraduate students in the social sciences to develop real-world applied research skills and experiences. A giant proportion of NSF grants that go to fund political science research are used to hire undergraduate research assistants. These students get their first experiences as researchers working on NSF-supported projects. They then filter into the government, non-profit and private sectors with the skills necessary for making careful, objective, data-driven decisions. This amendment would constitute a considerable blow to the analytical expertise represented in the American workforce.

NSF is the gold-standard for scientific research, and that standard should be applied to political science as well as to other fields.
