Is the CMC insane? Deny Marines promotions and duty assignments because they have too many tattoos? Deny qualified candidates entry into the Marine Corps because they have too many tattoos? Nobody cares about tattoos when the bullets are flying. I wonder how many KIA/WIA Marines have "too many tattoos?" SSGT USMC '70 - '78

My name is Shaina Gomez, I've been trying to join the Marines since I graduated high school in 2011 but my tattoo on my wrist made me automatically disqualified, I tried to get it waivered but it was denied. Its not bigger than a square inch and its fairly innocent since its my mother's name. I wish this policy would loosen up slightly, I want to be a Marine so bad! I don't know what else to do its been years and I'm still aiming at trying to join.

I joined in 2002 eas'd in 2006. I left the marine corps with full sleeves and had my hands done shortly after i returned home and eas'd... In 2008 I was involuntaryly recalled and my tattoos weren't even second guessed. Then I check in high ups were extremely shocked. Here I was this grumpy salt corporal with full sleeves, leg sleeves, and tops of my hands tattooed. Gunny Reigh of mwss 271 had a small stroke I swear. To make a long story short after my duty and orders where done i was wanting to go ahead and reenlist and make it a career this time. I had made e5 90 days into my orders so figured what the heck! Well since I was out of the marines before grandfathering of tattoos existed and then not grandfathered at my formation for IRR I couldn't! This has really affected my life a bunch because all I honestly know/knew was the marine corps. So at 29 yrs old in best shape of my life, mentally stronger and physically stronger than I've ever been why can't I become a marine again? And why do boot*****recruiters laugh when I ask if any changes to the tattoo policy? No respect for high ups? Thought there is a general order for that?

I'm a poole and I see guys and girls walking in the recruiters office. Only to get struck down asap, because their tatoos. I mean if that's the rule then I suppose but I dont think a women or man should be judged by good tatoos of their willing to put their life on the line. Serve their country. I could understand not be medically cleared but tatoos are harmless. The good ones. Breaks my heart to see people walk away. Becoming a Marine is the most important thing in my life. I dont have tatoos but If I feel this strongly without them. Imaging people with tatoos not being able to have a chance bothers me.:/

I am prior service Navy got out in 2009. While going to college I got interested in joining the Marine Corps. Reserve. As soon as the recruiter saw me he said no way because of the tattoos on my arms. Nothing vulgar at all, just too big and considered a sleeve. I know the Army has a lighter tattoo policy. But I don't want to be in the Army, I want to be in the Marines!!!

As a currently enlisted Marine, I believe this policy is also unfair. I believe this is one policy that I wish never came out. It was a tradition, a culture. I know many fathers that would've cringed their teeth if their daughters started dating a man with sleeves...except if that man was a Marine, then he would be proud. Would advise highly that this policy either be looked at again or completely thrown out.

My brother was one of the fallen 19 firefighters in Yarnell AZ. He served in the USMC and I was with him when he got his USMC tribal band on his arm. He was very proud to be a Marine, its what shaped him into becoming the man he was. Most Marines I know have a tattoo to represent their time in the Corps. Only the few and proud can get away with a USMC tattoo.

I have been denied for warrant officer. I have been denied for Marine Security Guard duty two weeks before I was going to report to the school. Additionally I had already sold my personally owned vehicles and many other items in preparation to fulfill my duties. I have always given 110% to the Corp and I have an out standing record to prove it. Over twelve years of service and this is how I have been repaid. I don't ask for anything that Female in the 70s didn't ask for. The opportunity to serve the Corps and to be allowed to be competitive with my peers.

My husband is an honorable discharge Marine and was ready for re-enlistment in OCS. He was only denied because of the words like; 'Honor', 'Courage', 'Preserverence' and 'Forever the Fight' on his arms. Nothing vulgar, racist/sexist or dishonorable, yet the words he lived by in the Marine Corps are held against him in a negative manner. This policy needs to change in regards to the TYPE of tattoos one presents with, not merely because they have tattoos. Lets Re-think this for the benefit of all our men and women who serve, have served and want to serve again!

The policy is garbage and did nothing to stop Marines from having various tattos in the past. I feel this was a few "personal" opinions.

Not a fan of tattoos, but this is an irrational rule. Go back to the head, hand, and neck rule. But I would add no gang tats. But there must be a willingness for the government to pay to remove anything that is not accepted by the gov. when recruiting without making that a factor on whether a person is a candidate for the armed services.
