It is quite unfair to the 2011 teams to have had this venue change made in midstream, since the National Mall is a significant consideration in deciding to enter the contest in the first place if you recognize: (1) the sheer cost of such a project (6 or 7 figures); (2) the many thousands of student-hours invested in design and construction; (3) the number of donors required to support the cost of the project (a few hundred); (4) the number of students involved per team (25 to 200); and (5) the truly enormous effort required that goes well beyond anything that a university is typically involved in. Thus, this is a justifiable project only if the venue is the National Mall. Without this national forum and exposure, few teams would be inclined to enter future contests, so this change in venue has the potential to potentially derail the contest, thus denying the creativity of many future teams and students.Jan 18th, 2011Someone from Jersey City, NJ signed.

I am signing this petition as a student who is participating in the upcoming 2011 Solar Decathlon. It is my opinion that while it is necessary to increase the protective measures that maintain our National Parks, that the new legislation allows for a one time exemption for the 2011 Solar Decathlon. This exemption is needed to prevent the immense negative impact that removing the 2011 Solar Decathlon from the National Mall would create. One example illustrating the negative effects associated with moving the competition is that current and potential sponsors of the students houses will shy away from or retract their pledges for donation because of the fear that the new venue will not draw any exposure to the event. The Solar Decathlon at the National Mall is currently on its fifth run and has become a widely know and sought after event not just because of the teams efforts but because of the honorable and high profile location. As it stands now, the 2011 Solar Decathlon is an orphaned competition and because of this there is no longer a guarantee of exposure that can be given to the sponsors who fund ninety percent of these efforts. I ask that you understand the severity of this and other possible negative implications with respect to the students efforts and the net benefit of the Solar Decathlons efforts at large and allow for the 2011 competition to take place one last time on the National Mall.REPORT COMMENTS

This competition is the most powerful and inspirational way to promote the increased use of renewable energy, energy efficient residential design, and responsible energy use in the US. There is not better place to showcase the hard work and innovation of the world's brightest and most talented students than on the National Mall in Washington DC.REPORT COMMENTS

The National Mall is the heart of this competition and holding it anywhere else just won't do it justice.REPORT COMMENTS
