I am 61 years old and I have always had issues with my back. My surgeon says I have curvature of the spine, leaking disk, degenerative disk and pinched nerves in my so S1 region. The surgery would take 4 hours and at least a year of recovery. He said if my pain Dr would control my pain he would not recommend the surgery because of my age, but she refuses to help me. Crying in Ohio.

This is a problem that hits home for me. I am 28 years old and have horrible back issues. Please be kind to those with chronic pain. Living in pain is hard enough as it is, but to also feel embarrassed when you go to health care workers for help they don't want to give is inexcusable.

I live with a chronic pain sufferer and it is agonizing to watch the continual agony he endures. The only purpose the pain medication filled was to have some semblance of quality of life. I'm not talking about going skydiving; I'm talking about going out to dinner, going to the movies, taking a walk. I don't want to see him turned into a zombie by substitutions like anti-depressants and seizure medication. He had a perfect medication for his condition without having to increase dosage. Now, the DEA and FDA are scaring our Doctors and tying their hands behind their backs. Pain patients are treated with disdain and made to feel like criminals. How can our government dictate what depth of pain an injury causes each individual? Every person is different and has their own tolerance or intolerance. You CAN NOT use the same measurement for everyone! I was born into an America where "We the People" had rights! What happened to The Declaration of Independence and our "unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness" ? Please, Congress, quit taking the easy way out!

I have chronic pain from a spinal cord injury 10 years ago. I have had the same amount for over 5 years. I don't crave more. I don't sell them on the street. I don't use them to get intoxicated. I don't misuse them in am fashion. I do want to continue to have a quality of life. My medication allows me to walk with my wife. Cut the grass. Drive a car. LIVE LIKE A NORMAL PERSON.

13 years of chronic pain from an incomplete spinal cord injury left for 18 months by a neglegent nurse practitioner and a neurosurgeon., 2 cervical spine fusions ,and im in need of a spinal cage due to instability in my back from injuries in a car accident. My wonderful dr of 12 years retired and thats where my nightmare has resumed. Ive been on 3 to 5 norco daily for 13 years. Was the med chosen by my dr as i have arrythemias that affect the top and bottom of my heart. He said norco has been around a hundred years and doesnt have a contraindication for rhythem disturbances. They were prescribed as needed so I can control when and where im using medication or not such as driving working exct. I went to a new dr and was told norco is out of the question but prescribed methadone a stronger more addictive medication that left me on the floor unconscious, I passed out from tachycardia episode that reverted and left me with 2 months of pvcs coming from the bottom of my heart for more than 30% of my heart beats. Was oops dont take that again I could have died from a heart attack. Thats it? I was even told that by my cardiologist not to take it again.. I was given a referral to a new dr.within their clinic who prescribes norco. He reviewed everything and prescribed norco. So the new doc had me see a pain nurse within the clinic to see if there was something more I could be helped with. She told me as soon as she walked in she doesnt prescribe norco doesnt believe in it and said she was going to prescribe methadone. She accused me of being addicted to norco because I refused to try methadone again even though its documented in my records and listed as an allergen. She became angry and said my only choice is ms contin or a weaning off dosage of norcos. She gave me a paper on ms contin and its contraindicated for rhythem disorders. Im not looking for a high my pain levels are further reaching than norco. i get a reprieve from the pain that controls me and i then have a pain level to which I am in control of. I can got to the park with my family, I can work and I can live not exist. There is a difference. i live with daily pain of varrying levels but daily pain that never goes away. Ive never abused any drug or alcohol. Never had any discrepancies in the drug testing that comes with being a patient treated for pain. This has not only been a detriment to people who are in pain and now cannot get treatment or receive mistreatment and it happens more than the medical profession will admit. But also to patients like myself who are loking for relief not total obliteration of the pain because with that comes strong long acting highly addictive time released medications to which there is no control of when the medications release because each persons system is different. I dont want stronger longer in my system 24/7. There may be the day when im going to need the stronger but not today. And so at this point im forced to endure severe pain alone, or play the ga

I suffer from chronic pain, and have a hard time getting my doctor to prescribe me anything to help with the pain. We are NOT drug seekers, all we want is relief from our pain.

Obamacare is another reason chronic pain patients cannot get proper medical care. Workers' Compensation denies everything to patients these days. Suicides are at an all time high in our country. Our entire system is broken; our government is run by stupid people. Donald Trump is right. Time to get rid of almost all of them and start over.

The DEA couldn't catch a drug dealer if they were sitting on their dinner plate, shouting up at them "Hey we are drug dealers, real ones". Or arrest some punk and scare them with lies that they become an informant. Which is just code for "the one they let get away with what they are busting everyone else for" that is All Law Agencies. What is happening with doctors/patients/pharmacies the DEA/FDA is similar to the NAZI boot on the necks of the people. where I live sw,pa they have disgraced so many doctors, no charges, no court date just took script ability, if the Dr. can't write a script then what good is he. They're pushing non-narcotic pain relievers, anti-depressants and nerve blockers. All of them are a waste of money, except anti-inflammation meds, the rest leave one feeling jittery, depressed, lack of or to much sleep. Sever continuous PAIN serves no purpose and must be treated which good old fashion central nerve system meds, i.e. morphine, hydrocodone, oxycodone and on and on and on. It is a sad state when person is prescribed mind/mental altering meds for pain. Yes, one can become physically dependent to these meds. An usually does if taken for a long time. With proper care and Dr./pat relationship these topics should be address. Numbing the CNS is far better than intentionally filling a patient with harmful mind altering meds. I can get meds everyday , as longs as I have money, they are so stupid {DEA}. The doc/pats they have done this to, are not the problem. Need some help catching the bad guys , let me know. I can help.

Living in Florida is harder than many other states for chronic pain patients. I'm just about to turn 30, 2 and a half years ago, my back gave out for no known reason, and it's only gotten worse from there. I was put on opiates, and physical therapy along with steroids and epidural injections as well as subject to going through surgery in the coming weeks. This all happened as the crack down by the DEA was happening in Tampa. I was judged by doctors and pharmacists alike, and I never "doctor shopped". Almost 2 months ago, my doctor deemed me untreatable and stopped all medication and dropped me as a patient so I could "get my life back" Since then, I've been in the ER 5 times, and have had to illegally find opiates to control my pain. DEA.... Your micromanagement of pain clinics is ENFORCING the illegal drug trade. If chronic pain patients can't legally be treated for their pain, they WILL find other ways. And its NOT because I or we need a high, it's because we can't function in such intense pain.

People should not have to suffer from chronic pain no matter what!! No patient in pain should have to hear their Dr tell them, I am not getting my license taken. This insanity needs to come to a stop NOW.

RE: Taking Patients of Pain Medications To Whom it May Concern, I am writing today on behalf of someone I know who is on Narcotic Pain Medication and Anti-Anxiety Medication, and who has been on them for several years. She suffers from advanced Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA), Panic Attacks and Depression. She is in pain 24/7 with nothing that works to relieve the pain other than the Narcotic Pain Medication. It took years to find medications that work for her and now she is being told the DEA, Insurance Companies and other agencies, are saying that people don?t need Narcotic Pain Medication or Anti-Anxiety Medication, that there is too much ?drug use? in this country and people don?t need the drugs. How can a government agency decide they know what is best for people that suffer from chronic pain, anxiety, depression? The government, insurance companies and others that ARE NOT INVOLVED IN THE PATIENTS CARE, are stepping in and saying that the patients don?t need these drugs to live day to day. That they are ?Addicts? of they stay on the medications. When you suffer chronic pain combined with anxiety and depression, some times the only thing getting you out of bed in the morning is the ability to have relief from the pain, anxiety and depression. These people aren?t ?drug addicts?, they are simply people who need stronger medicine to control the pain so they can have a relatively normal life. The person I am specifically referring to, (and many others who most likely fall into this category), has days where she struggles to be able to move just to get out of bed. There are days where all she can do is rest because she is in so much pain. Chronic pain causes depression, combined with her anxiety and panic attacks, makes it extremely difficult to do things. She was doing well with her maintenance doses, being able to make herself meals, drive to appointments, grocery shop, all the things a healthy person takes for granted. What a healthy person does in a day takes her a week or more to accomplish because of the pain. People who do as they are supposed to, that take their medication as instructed, that follow all the rules, are being punished because of the ?drug addicts? that buy drugs off the streets from drug dealers, that steal to feed their habits, that are truly ?addicted?. Doctors should have the rights and ability to prescribe what their patients need to have a normal and active life. They should be able to help their patients with whatever medications work for the patient, not have their hands tied by governments or insurance companies. I have helped this person, as a sort of counselor, get through this ordeal. And it is an ordeal. She was doing well, not perfect, but well, with the dosages she was on. She was able to do everyday things that you and I take for granted. Now she has nothing. We end up talking up to three hours a day, just trying to keep her on an even keel. It shouldn?t be this w

I have a spinal cord tumor crushing and causing impingement on my spinal nerves. I can't get any pain relief, my nuerosurgeon does not want to do surgery due to the risk. These doctors won't prescribe me anything that effectively treats my pain. I am in the middle of being discharged from the army because they can't get my pain under control. I have suffered for 3 years. I can go to war for this country, yet this country can't help me and my pain....

It is a crime that so many suffer because of the actions of the DEA. People are suffering beyond comprehension. I watched my mother die slowly from breast cancer without any pain meds because doctors were to afraid to prescribe them. :( I beg you to allow doctors to have the freedom to treat people as they were trained to do.

Thank you for your candid, well written petition. My fiancé is, unfortunately, in the VA system and cannot get the care he desperately needs for his chronic pain, which he has had for over 13 years and which has increased substantially just in the last two years. What my boyfriend is having to endure because of a system that is failing him is inhumane and unethical. He has had two suicide attempts because he gets to a point where he can no longer manage. In the 2 1/2 years that he has been in the VA system, he has only been examined by one doctor who actually lowered his medication from his previous private care physician. The neuroscience unit refuses to set an appointment for my fiancé and we have no idea why. He is seriously under medicated, but ultimately desires life changing solutions so he doesn't have to be on meds for his whole life. But no one will provide care for him. His life has become a nightmare.
