I am truly sorry about the addiction that is rampant in this country. I feel sorrow for the families and communities It is a hateful situation and we need to not only offer long term ongoing intervention and therapy Currently the insurance only allows us so many visits a year for mental health) and collect information as to why this is happening. There maybe many underlying issues we do not understand. I get this. BUT If you do not have years upon years of spending thousands of dollars trying to avoid taking narcotics and you cave in and finally have the first relief in decades and it gives you hope for life. Too many of my cohorts have killed them selves BECAUSE they no longer had the energy to jump through all the hoops of the current attitude for Chronic pain. And the added expense of the pain drs, urine tests, transportation. Going to different pharmacies to get their legally prescribed medicine made to feel like a junkie. It is easier to be dead. But then maybe those in charge want us to be. First and foremost please make insurance companies pay for deep tissue medical massage and other complementary medicine so perhaps we could get SOME relief and need less meds keep us participating in THIS life. I have never gotten high from my meds. Do not want to. I just want to participate in this life.May 21st, 2016Someone from Austin, TX signed.

This is not a "chronic pain" issue, it is a constant pain issue. The DEA needs to get it right and stop tying the MD's hands when working with patients who only get relief from "narcotics". To say that a patient that can't take anti-inflammatory drugs are drug seeking is said out of ignorance. I can't take them because I have a history of gastric ulcers and the amount I would have to take to deal with my constant pain is a high risk for problems with my stomach. I am not overusing, do not feel I am addicted, but am acclimated to the medication. A medical professional said yesterday that narcotics are not appropriate for "chronic" pain and that they don't work. Obviously she has never suffered from pain like I have.REPORT COMMENTS

I found out medicaid is charged $600 per urine tests that pain mngmnt requires every 30 days in order to receive pain meds. How much waste of a limited resource is that? Medicaid could put that $ into provide more meds instead of just making cuts but the DEA wont let them because saving $ is more important then wasting everyones time and insurance $ with all these Dr visits and monthly test to obtain a $30 prescrption. Pain suffers pay the price. Last Dr I saw straight lied to my face then ran out the door. when I was still speaking to him. He said sure no problem with continuing your meds your last Dr had you on just need an mri. Another expensive treatment being charged to medicaid. I had been on opiate pain meds for 6 months and when I made this appt I specifically stated the reason for my visit is for pain med refill for I would soon be out. I go to check out but there was no script. So I had to go thru hard withdrawls with no assistance and was very sick and that is what Dr calls "I was doing no harm." The office manger says to me oh we have no idea if your getting pain meds from other Dr. I told them when I made the appt I was dismissed from the only Dr prescribing me opiates. They have access to databases that tell them all Dr you see and what you have been prescribed. They played dumb then told me I was just seeking pills and that I was better off without them. Well you can guess what I said next.REPORT COMMENTS

It has always been a fascination to me why in all history of the united states, any drug allowed to be prescribed by a licensed doctor was always mandated and directed by the FDA, DEA, and USP for manufacturing. Why are politicians deciding Medicinal Marijuana and stopping pain medicines. Does our political Structure now dictate what is medically best for a patients treatment program. Chronic or acute pain has not been case studied by anyone in congress. This is a sham. Why Marijuana available and stopping pain medications regulated and controlled by our own personal doctors. Does anyone not get this irony...............Obama can go as soon as we can kick him out. This is a mess and we all need to get letters to our local representatives, congressmen, and white house to vote in favor of candidates that are in touch with a patients life, not legal guesswork. I suffer from a failed back surgery with stenosis on both sided of Lumbar vert meaning I have electric and burning pains down my legs to my feet ever step and every twist. No more meds are available because all doctors are afraid to lose the license if they help a patient. The lawmakers have a better care plan outlined for those of us who will not get better, will suffer more, and are just trying to survive this hell of physical body we are left with. Duhhh the heroin usage has continued to rise albeit the doctors are not writing the scripts. Who will not admit an error. H is cheaper and less problematic to get on the street. I have never been into conspiracy, but why would a government allow flooding of stronger opiates to flood our nation, unchecked and I cant remember any good H bust any time in the last years. Lets also give everybody Marijuana and increase its availability. So in a short time we have a nation addicted to H and stupid on Mary J.REPORT COMMENTS

In addition, now doctors use their "pain contracts" to force patients to undergo invasive procedures, regardless of the fact that their pain is being well managed by current Opioid and other non-invasive modalities. They say, if you do not allow us to do some procedure, then we will not treat you anymore. Too often they compound the problem by forcing patients to undergo multiple rounds of procedures, where they do worse after the first, so they move to a second, then a third... I know of several people who this has happened to, including myself. HOW CAN THIS POSSIBLY BE IN LINE WITH "DO NO HARM"?REPORT COMMENTS

There have been many mistakes made in the use of opioid pain medications, but don't add to the errors by targeting physicians who treat chronic pain patients. I have had my intractable pain managed for over 10 years with the help of opioid medications. I also have been able, with some new programs, to reduce my medications by half. Please don't by the hyped-up generalizations and medical untruths about treatment. There are many, many conditions, rare and otherwise, that cause chronic, intractable pain. Pray you never suffer from them and, protect human beings' rights to have all of their symptoms treated, including pain. Thank you.REPORT COMMENTS

The DEA was created to battle the war on illegal clandestine drugs. They have no right to tell a doctor how to practice medicine, that would be like a doctor telling the DEA how to deal with colombian cartel and threatening them with bad things!!! communisim!!! period!!!REPORT COMMENTS

I've been in chronic pain for 25 years & have been with my same pain management dr. for 20 of those years. I've has shots, epidurals, PT, biofeedback & 23 surgeries. I'm just 45 this year! But now my dr is being forced by our government to slowly take my meds away. So, basically what little quality of life I have will be robbed from me. Im supposed to live the rest of my life suffering? Like many chronic pain patients I've spoken with, I can not live like that! So our government is basically giving me the death sentence for something that's out of my control? I've done nothing wrong! I dont sell or over use my meds, I have never failed a drug test from my pain dr & there's more than sufficient evidence in my medical chart to support my meds. But still he's terrified because he faces jail time & loss of his license?? It's just ludicrous & wrong. Why should I suffer for the stupidity of others?REPORT COMMENTS

I am in that category of senior citizens with chronic pain among other illness. I just recently read two research reports that said that patients dying and those with a terminal disease are not given adequate pain medication to relieve their pains. What kind of Nation does that? I am approaching that place and I am terrified! I have given at least 52 of my 72 years of life to the benefit of all and allways did my very best in everything I have done. Not just adequate, I did my utmost best in my contribution to society and now as I approach the end of my life I am refused, not the best, but simply adequate pain medication so I can have a quality life, so the rest of my life mirrors the quality of my contributions to society. This is simply unacceptable. And to think that there is nothing being done to change this gastly condition! What have we as a Nation become? I also wonder, how is the prescribing of pain medication to those in high position handled? Do they get harnessed, made to beg, having to search for a doctor who, if lucky, will prescribe inadequate pain medication, made to sign a contract with that doctor and being regularly drug tested? And if they are so unlucky as to suffer a terminal disease are they too left suffering with inadequate pain relief? It's just a thought.REPORT COMMENTS

I just recently had surgery to have a kissing stents placed in my iliac arteries and into the main aorta. The surgery went fine but when I was in recovery the artery burst and I bled out. They spent 5 hours trying to recover me. In order to stop the bleeding they had to put a lot of pressure on my abdomen for hours. It was extremely painful when it burst and it was much more painful when I woke up from all of the stuff they had done to that area. I felt like I had been beaten up and was getting shooting pains from the artery. The doctor said the artery would relax over time. 6-weeks approx. was what he said. They sent me home with an extremely bruised abdomen, pain in the groin from the actual surgery where they went into the artery, shooting pains from the bursted artery and told me to take Tylenol and walk it off. I'm 44 years old, a professional, NOT a drug addict, have had the same doctor for over 5 years, have an extremely expensive premium plus a very high deductible. I literally paid everything out of pocket myself because of the awful insurance now that makes me pay more so other people get treatment and yet I pay to get mistreated!! Then the doctors argued about if I should take Tylenol or Ibuprofen. The surgeon said Ibuprofen my cardiologist said Tylenol not to take the ibuprofen because it was a blood thinner. The surgeon got mad. Really? It didn't matter which one I took they didn't help and I'm still in pain!!!REPORT COMMENTS

Through no fault of my own, I was in two car accidents that decimated my spine. I now have four healed fractures (though one healed incorrectly and calcified over a cluster of nerves, so every movement of my midsection causes me pain). I have two cervical fusions. Merely looking down at the floor can cause the back of my skull to explode in pain. Lower-back instability has resulted in sciatica. For a long time (until the second cervical fusion), my hands could not hold a pen. I was prescribed opioids after the FIRST accident, back when I only had an injury to my midsection. Now I have injuries to my neck, midsection, and low back, and I am told that my injuries do not warrant opioid intervention. I had to leave my job, and I am only 29. I can no longer effectively participate in the normal work force. I want to be a contributing member of society, and the vast majority of chronic pain patients do not abuse the drug regimen. We want to be normal. We don't take opioids to get high; we take opioids to feel normal again. For a normal person, it gets them high. For us, it quells the pain and brings us back to our normal baseline -- our actual "normal." Opioid medication cannot be banned without another intervention in place. This is a catastrophic situation for people who have had to rely on these medications for years if not decades. Removing them without considering each patient as an individual is irresponsible and callous. Please do not demonize doctors and make it impossible for them to prescribe for fear of their licenses being revoked. They only want to help us with our pain. Don't make the mistake of putting your collective judgment over theirs. They know what they are doing far more than non-doctors do.REPORT COMMENTS

As a chronic pain sufferer for years I was just told that due to new restrictions the doctor who has given me my pain meds for the past 4 years now cannot give me any, and referred me to a doctor to get methadone if I get any withdrawal symptoms. If I got any withdrawal symptoms I was immediately classified as an addict. Logic is not used in these cases and doctors are being forced to be discriminating against chronic pain patients. Of course a patient who has been on pain meds for 7+ years will get withdrawal symptoms if you pull their meds one day, but your classified as a horrible human being instead. So now I suffer in silence with no meds for pain or wothdrawls, just so I don't have to be ridiculed or worse trying to get some help. I can't go hang out with people because I get bad pain after standkng for about 30- 45 min with no meds. What's going to happen next? My quality of life from depression and anxiety is increased because of fhis, and I've taken years away from treating my issues to increase my quality of life, and it looks like I'll never get those years back.REPORT COMMENTS
