Please help keep horse slaughter illegal in our country. It's heartbreaking that these animals sometimes spend their lives giving everything they have as pets for many of the good years of their lives, only to be sold to slaughter down the road. And some are simply born, or through changing hands in owners, end up in the wrong place at the wrong time. These are beautiful majestic magnificent animals, and no matter what they've done or who has owned them, they don't deserve to meet this kind of torturous demise. I hope kindness and compassion will win out on this one. -

Everything that is stated here is true, but I'd like to add that familiarizing yourselves with the slaughter process would be enough to turn anyone with an ounce of emotion off. The other thing is that Europeans are becoming horrified as they gain more understanding of what the U.S. horses endure before landing on their plates.REPORT COMMENTS

Horse brokers and kill buyers naturally consider horses to be "livestock," but the majority of Americans disagree, including me, because we have formed intellectual and emotional partnerships with them. If not for horses, America would not exist. They pulled wagons, carried soldiers, etc etc etc and deserve special consideration. They are respected partners and companions, in ways very similar to partnering with dogs. Dogs have their agility courses while horses have their jumping courses. Dogs do obedience shows. Horses have events where they are also judged on their obedience and manners, whether in hand, under saddle or hooked to a cart or carriage. Dogs do search and rescue - so do horses. I could keep going but hopefully by now it has become clear to you why horses should NOT be subjected to a "livestock" status. Also, responsible owners make sure their horses (and dogs) are seen by a vet at least once a year and vaccinated, dewormed regularly (every 2-3 mos), put on supplements or whatever it takes to keep them well.REPORT COMMENTS

If people knew that horses are being slaughtered by means NOT meant for them, they would be appalled. Maybe if it was humane, this would be different, but it is NOT. Our horses should not be sent overseas for meat - did you know those countries really have no idea how horses are slaughtered?? Ignorance is bliss I guess.
