Proper demographic data is crucial for making policy decisions and for good quality research on the state of our country. As a researcher and professor who uses the ACS for research and teaching, I urge you to continue to fund the collection of this important data source.

The ACS is absolutely necessary to advance research and teaching in the social sciences. I urge your support to defeat any bill to eliminate funding for it.

As a sociology professor and researcher I have used the ACS research (and in the past when the same info was collected by the census) in several different contexts, including a study examining how women graduate student's have adjusted their fertility levels as more women have entered schools (published in Population Research and Population Review). I also heavily rely on ACS data for the courses I teach as a sociology professor at UNCG, and frequently use information gathered there to illustrate how people's behavior has changed over time, and what current behavior looks like. Defunding this survey will end a tradition lasting over 100 years of collecting this information, and will leave a huge gap in our knowledge about United States citizens that can help inform policy. You will be doing us researchers and future generations of people who want to know what life was like during our time a huge disservice by defunding this survey.

As a researcher and evaluator for federally funded programs, I can not think of an more misguided piece of legislation. no matter what decisions our country chooses to make, they should be evidence based decisions. and when it comes to making socio-political and economic decisions, there is no more comprehensive source of evidence than the ACS. Our leaders can not guide our country effectively, if they do not have their finger on the heart beat of america. it is surveys like this that are that finger... measuring and tracking the status of american life. without it, we are flying blind. please vote to keep funding the ACS! thank you!

It seems arrogant to me that one would assume that the information compiled by the Census in the ACS is not critical in formulating policy that is efficient and provides knowledge on the best use of public funds. ACS seems like a classic opportunity for government to invest in "infrastructure" that would not otherwise be invested in and that benefits a huge majority in America.
