As a Parent Plus Loan borrower (for three now-grown children), a grandmother and an honest, hard-working citizen, I can honestly say that my country has let me down. I am heartbroken (if not horrified) that I will go to my grave a pauper after trying SO HARD to do the right thing all my life. My social security benefits will surely be garnished, any hope of saving for retirement has been dashed, any chance of paying down--and NEVER off--any Parent Plus Loan has been stricken from my future. This is MY country? This is absurd! We students and parents have only been trying to do the right thing!REPORT COMMENTS

As it stands now, because of life situation and compound interest, I have over a quarter of a million dollar debt. I am 59. My retirement will be severely compromised by this situation. This was not necessary.REPORT COMMENTS

Contrary to popular belief, having bankruptcy protections does not mean anything unusual. What's unusual is the current overreach these loan holders have. They are able to take social security from seniors who are barely surviving. Bankruptcy is meant to keep penalties from being unfair and impossible, and to keep the country from having an underclass of indentured servants.REPORT COMMENTS
