Anyone who hasn't secured employment in their area of study for a duration exceeding one year or longer in in the first three years after graduation from college, should be allowed to have student loan debt waived, especially if that individual or family earns less than $125,000 yearly. Also, if someone applies for and is approved to receive social security benefits, their student loan arrears need to be cleared entirely.Oct 5th, 2016Laura C. from Cle Elum, WA writes:

Many need help and the government needs to rethink private student loans. So many people work hard for a education only to end up drowning in debt when the job their degree affords them doesn't make it feasable to pay loans that seem to never get paid off. I hope congress will finally fix this issue that leaves people no way out.REPORT COMMENTS

I borrowed close to 55,000 for graduate school. I now owe more than 85,00. That is legalized exortion!!! I already paid off 28,000 dollars in student loan debt for a private loan. Basically, I will pay 3X what I borrowed. Oh, and I am a social worker making less than 75k a year!!REPORT COMMENTS

To The Esteemed Members of Congress: I am appealing to your sense of fair play and compassion for your fellow countrymen. I am a widow with two minor children whom has been denied gainful employment because of my inability to meet my student loan obligations. Both me and my children are at a standstill locked in perpetual impoverishment with me being unemployed/underemployed and having the full oppressive weight of both private and federal loans. I am barely able to meet my children's physical needs let alone save anything for retirement or for their future. I cannot understand why my nation required an independent contractor to reject me based upon my credit; I cannot understand why my nation wants to treat me as a criminal due to my financial status; I cannot understand why my nation will not give me and 27 million other defaulted Americans a true fresh start from the Recession. I feel no nation can sustain its legitimacy when it treats 44 million of its people as indentured servants and bars them from the privileges and immunities of our laws (bankruptcy in this case) that other members are able to enjoy. This type of policy is in contradiction and violation to Article IV Sec. 2 of our Constitution as well as the spirit of our American heritage. Our founding fathers did not over throw one tyrant in order to support another. Give us back our access to bankruptcy protections and let our people fully rebuild. There is nothing you stand to gain by abusing a widow and her two children. Sincerely, Kara KerrREPORT COMMENTS
