I find this highly discriminatory to those of us who purchased in 2008. Those who purchased in 2009 do not have to repay yet we do. Where is the justification for this? My accountant at the time inferred to me that this would very likely be repealed due to the unfairness of the situation, yet here we are in 2014, still required to pay. -

This repayment is an unfair burden on middle income tax payers. Please cancel repayment.REPORT COMMENTS

Yes its not fair! I lost my home trying desperately to get a modification for 3 years to no avail, thanks to Wells Fargo! So everytime i have done my taxes since 2009 they have deducted $300 out of my return to date! And mind you I lost my home!!REPORT COMMENTS

I don't think it's fair that we have to pay back this so called credit, and the term credit alone does not imply loan! I was encouraged to purchase my house with the incentive of receiving the credit. Why did we receive less and have to pay back?REPORT COMMENTS

3 months made all the difference!! If anyone purchased a home 1 January 2009 they we given $8000 without having to repay!!! Should make it right by all those who received the $7500 in 2008 and let the remaining balance be forgiven as well!!REPORT COMMENTS

This is why many of us look upon the IRS with a preplexed mind, scratching our heads. Who came up with this ideal? I bet that person doesn't work there anymore...REPORT COMMENTS

I bought my home in April 2008. Very unfair to extend it to 2009 and others don't have to repay the debt! Although the housing market was declining, everything else has skyrocketed except for my wages. Very thankful to have a job but I haven't had a raise in 5 years!REPORT COMMENTS

Both loan/gift programs the 2008 and the 2009 programs are inherently for the exact same reason and approved by the same government. So, why does one set of Americans have to pay it back but not the other?REPORT COMMENTS

So the folks who just happened to buy in 2008 are being punished for buying in 2008. Why should I be punished for buying a home in a particular year? This is our government doing its best work or should I say punishing a certain group of people who bought in 2008. If you bought after that though, you're good! Absurd. I had to buy in 2008 due to relocation of my job. If this would've happened a year later, I wouldn't be in this situation. Oh yes, unfair and unruly to see say the least.REPORT COMMENTS

I miss the better program by one day and don't believe it's fair. This repayment should be abolished to mirror the revised / updated credit. Repayments already made should become a tax deduction until repaid back to the taxpayer.REPORT COMMENTS

Wow, were we completely uninformed. I thought it was a free gift! I haven't done our taxes ever, but I remember seeing my hubby do them in 2012, and I asked why he'd put $500 on the tax forms. He said we had to pay it back. I was stunned. that we were supposed to pay back $500/year starting in 2010 for the purchase of our home in August of 2008. I just happened to look and apparently it was our responsibility to let our tax preparer know for 2014 taxes...which we didn't! Good grief, this tax stuff is so frustrating. Why must life be all about owing money and barely scraping by sometimes? If we could keep even half the money we pay in taxes, I imagine our house wouldn't look as worn down as it does. What lies in our future? How am I to be optimistic? I should take out loans so I am even more in debt? And now I read that others after a certain date got more money AND don't have to repay it. So, the government has basically said,"Okay, now we have gotten all these folks on the bandwagon. The next folks can just let it slide." Really???REPORT COMMENTS
