The international community has achieved consensus that we must honor Indigenous peoples' right to self-determination for the benefit of all humanity. It is shameful and disappointing that the US has been so slow to respond. Among the four nations which voted against the UNDRIP, the US is the last to reconsider: New Zealand and Australia have already reversed their votes and Canada is considering a reversal. Signing the declaration is not enough. Affirmation of the UNDRIP must be followed by swift action to recognize Indigenous peoples' rights to self-determination, including collective rights, and capacity for self-government. I urge members of Congress to take these steps immediately.REPORT COMMENTS

Adopting the Declariation the Rights of Indigenous Peoples will send a strong statement to an extremely anti-native state like South Dakota--commonly known throughout the states as the Mississippi of the north or in a global context, the South Africa of the US.REPORT COMMENTS
