Although I am not a political scientist, almost every day I read scholarly articles by political scientists or blog posts in which they discuss their research. Keeping myself informed about research in political science makes me a better citizen and a better voter. Political science research is important because politics is important.

If we value democracy, we have to understand it. If we want peace, we must look for its causes. If we hope to understand our allies - or our potential enemies - we need to understand their publics... Supporting political science is the responsible thing to do.

It shames me that a senator from my own state continually attacks basic research in a number of fields in an attempt to score cheap points for his reputation as an austerity watchdog. That he would do so in the field of political science, specifically, is a farce. His campaigns and the campaigns of his party make use of the mathematics and discoveries that polisci brings to the table, but they can't be bothered to support a public effort to push those discoveries forward? I doubt this petition will matter one bit. Regardless of any input, Republican brass have already decided that this is an easy way to claim another five million dollars 'saved for the American people', because they don't see the loss of research as a negative consequence. Perhaps they would rather this work be done by the parties themselves, rather than by the people for the people. More likely, I think, they simply cannot imagine a benefit for any research which does not improve their lives in the next six months. An entire generation trained to be shortsighted, tuned to optimize the returns for the next fiscal quarter or the next election, and to hell with posterity, would quite naturally fail in such a way. Science, including political science, matters. It matters not just because of what it can get for us, but because of what it does to us and through us. Scientific investigation cultivates the mind an ennobles the culture that embraces it, often with life-changing material effects that cannot be felt until decades after the money is spent. Will some great generation-defining discovery come out of political science in the next few years? I cannot say. Senator Coburn cannot say. And he is not interested in even attempting to help find out. Count me among those who find this sentiment deplorable.

It is impossible to understand our place in the world without the valuable work of political scientists.

Political science makes vital contributions in the areas of public policy, foreign affairs, and democratic theory - just to name a few. Political science is valuable to our world.

Political science can be extremely influential. Simply looking back to our Founding Fathers, we can see the evidence of this. Influenced by earlier inquirers into the science of politics, such as Montesquieu and Locke, are founders were driven to implement bold new ideas into their system of governing. Let us not turn out back on the scientific investigation of politics now... especially when we continue to need an understanding of our current political situations(s) and the possibilities that await us in the future.
