As a prior Army soldier, I'm ashamed that breed specific bans are taking place on military installations. When will we learn that it is not the breed, it is the owner. Excercise, discipline, and affection to dogs in that order maintains a healty, balanced dog despite the breed. I personally grew up with Dobermans and know them to be sweet, loyal family members. The freedom to choose what breed you want is part of the freedom I fought for when serving my country. Again, the ignorance and intolerance on display here is shameful.

It's totally unfair when people stereotype a breed as being evil and viscous. Hollywood has played a huge role in satanizing the Doberman, which is completely uncalled for. Some movies I watch just to see the beautiful Doberman villains all the while wishing I could have one. Someday I will get my own Dobe and bring him/her to parks and schools and let all the children come learn that they aren't the devil they're unfairly made out to be.

I agree, we are so quick to blame the breed. Don't blame the breed, blame the owner. Several of Micheal Vicks dogs became therapy dogs, some live with famililes and some earned good canine citizenship awards. Humans have a huge responsibility in this too.

Simply ridiculous. Dobermans are a wonderful, intelligent, obedient and LOVING breed. My husband and I have a Doberman and he's not our first Doberman. It's the only breed we'll ever have. They are wonderful with children! Best breed ever, hands down.

shame on the military for banning a breed that gave their life to save hundreds of men years ago. Ban the deed not the breed.

There are no bad dogs, only bad people who either make them aggressive OR breed them irresponsible and as a result the dog has mental issues. Hold the owners responsible, not punish the innocent.

The DoD has a propensity for taking action at times without any data what so ever. You either get used to it...or get out. It's unfortunate at times to lose good people because of issues like these where decisions are made because "leaders" are afraid to stand fast in the face of what "could happen".

I agree!!!! My husband and i have had our rottweiler for the last two years. he picked her out before her eyes were even open. she was the best dog we've ever owned and she loved all people, was amazing with children, and wouldnt hurt a fly. We also recently moved into military housing because living off post was getting too expensive and were forced to get rid of her. Luckily a friend gave her a good home but it was one of the hardest things we ever had to do. A stop needs to be put to this "vicious" breed list.

I agree the banning of a dog should be based on individual temperments and not the breed. It all comes down to the owners on how they handle their animals. Any breed of dog can be aggressive depending on how it is treated. Treat the animal with love and respect and you will receive it in return. I have had dobies for 35 years and my children were raised with them and never have these gentle dogs harmed any of my children. They are a family dog. I would never give mine up for anyone as I do not have disposable pets they are family. You need to wake up and get out of the mindset that all dobermans are vicious, same as with pitbulls, rottweillers, etc.

I have grown up with dobermans and they have protected our family against a burglary which put her up for a public service award. Dobermans are great dogs and deserve to be recognized for their service.

Dobermans are wonderful dogs. I have had one for over 20 years and could not find friendlier or better canine companions.

When we were stationed at Ramstein Air Base in Germany I flew my male Dobe over with us. We spent two years there and I worked on the base. I took my Dobe to work with me in my office at the back of the Enlisted men's club. We made deliveries to the tourist office and the Base Commanders office among others. The majority of Dobermans are good citizens with the sense to distinguish between danger and the need to defend. Even in defense they are "holders" not biters.

As a Marine and a long time owner & rescuer of dobermans, I can state both personally and professionally that the doberman breed does not belong on a ban list. The military and more specifically the Army should realize and understand that dog breeds, similarly to people can be made to be aggressive through neglect and abuse. The military provides extensive training to "undo" years of bad conditioning by way of their individualized/specialized boot camps. Many of the men and women who come to the military have unacceptable behaviors, ie., aggressiveness, laziness, poor attitudes and judgements due to their up- bringings and/or lack thereof. This is through no fault of their own. Like people, there are good dogs and bad dogs. But unlike people, dogs and specifically dobermans are not inherently bad, evil or dangerous. The actions or more specifically, the lack of positive actions of mankind cause a loving breed to become aggressive. The dobermans are a fiercely loyal breed of dog. They are NOT naturally prone to aggressiveness and/or attacks. The breed was and still continues to be breed as a protector, not a fighter. The military and more specifically, the United States Marines recognized the doberman breed for it's natural honorable qualities and it's eagerness to be trained and perform exceptionally. The countless lives that were saved due solely to the Doberman, the breed which the Army seeks to include in a dog ban is evident and part of our military history. The Army is knowingly doing a huge disservice to a breed which fought side by side w/my fellow soldiers. Perhaps the Army should place certain members of it's own branch on a ban list as a doberman is much more likely to serve the military honorably than many a solder has, both past or present. The breed has done nothing in the past or present to deserve to be placed on a dog aggressive ban. This fact, the Army should already know and recognize AND correct swiftly. Belgian Malinois pose a significantly larger threat to Army personnel and civilians than any breed of Doberman and yet the Army employs their services. Is an aggressive dog only acceptable when it can be exploited by the military? That seems to be the case.

It seems like you should ban the irresponsible owners not the breed.

i hope that i'm in time to help support your fight. i've owned two dobermans and neither one of them would go off unprovoked. they are one of the most loyal and intelligent breeds around, which is probably why the military has used them in action since the late 50's. makes no sense to me to ban them as pets on post. like george carlin once said "oxy moron: military intelligence."

Breed specific legislation is a failure everywhere it has been implemented because it is ridiculous and stupid. The U.S.Army is not famous for it's brains as it is - don't dig yourselves in any deeper!
