I don't think its fair that we are the only agency that works in the trenches day in and day out and will be singled out and be the only one that takes a massive pay cut.

I am a Border Patrol agent and have worked for the United States Border Patrol for 12 years. I live in Harlingen, Texas and I vote. I am writing to ask for your assistance with an important subject. Several weeks ago I reached out to your office concerning the lack of funding for Border Patrol agents. When I read that funding had been passed to keep Customs and Border Protection funded, I was relieved. Understand that the relief was short-lived. Apparently Customs and Border Protection (CBP) still intends to furlough and de-certify AUO. Pick up any newspaper, log on to Fox News, read the McAllen Monitor and you will be inundated with articles detailing the horrifying violence along the Mexico/Texas border. Agents stationed along this corridor risk their lives every day, yet CBP management refers to the agents as over-paid. CBP WILL NOT cut the pay of Customs Officers and yet they work in the safety of a Port of Entry. They are not out patrolling in remote locations alone where the threat of violence has increased. Hours spent tracking and arresting the aliens only to watch ICE release them so they can save money and not furlough their employees. I find myself utterly disillusioned with Customs and Border Protection and my elected officials. I am a registered Republican voter. I take the time to vote during elections, yet those I supported and voted for have allowed the government to place an undue heavy burden on Border Patrol agents that is disproportionate to other law enforcement officers/agents. An agent must remain focused and alert while on patrol, with talks of a 40% reduction in pay, how could their mind be focused on their job, security or safety. Families with both spouses employed as agents will be hit the hardest. I implore you to take the time to make unannounced, no media invited visits to the border. Skip the usual dog and pony show and sit down with the agents, talk to them one-on-one,without the fear of retaliation from CBP management and then you can decide if agents are truly over-paid. Ride along on patrols with field agents, not management, but actual agents who know their areas of responsibility, know how to cut sign and don't mind getting their boots dirty. See the border through the eyes of an agent and decide for yourself if our border is secure. Ask the agents what stations/areas you should visit, don't let management dictate your trip. It's not too late to make a difference in the lives of tens of thousands of Border Patrol agents, many of whom reside in the great State of Texas. As your constituent, I ask that you work to avoid a debacle, but failing that, please ensure that any cuts at CBP are fair and not punitive against Border Patrol agents. Sincerely, Juan Ayala
