Fmla should be available in the death of a spouse, especially when children are involved!! If my wife were to pass I don't even know how I would get my children to school and to the baby sitter!!!.. I should be allowed time to get things arranged!! -

My husband is on hospice. My employer give 5 day bereavement leave. Our son is in the USAF stationed in Europe. It will be a minimum of 10 days for him to get home for his Father's funeral. My husband's family leaves all over the USA. How can I coordinate all this and grieve? FMLA should be allowed for a death of a spouse and a child.REPORT COMMENTS

I agree and I think it should cover all family members (children, spouse, parents). I just lost my mom, who lives 1500 miles away. I will need to take care of not only funeral arrangements but also a lifetime of accrued stuff. Three days would be ridiculous, considering two would be spent traveling.REPORT COMMENTS

I totally agree. I have lost 2 people so close this year, my sister and my adopted mom. I learned the news within an hour of going to work. I only work part-time due to my own health issues. I didn't miss a beat or I would have had to make up the missed days. I kept on trucking as they say.REPORT COMMENTS

Our son and three young grandchildren (10, 9, & 6) were left without a wife and mother when she suddenly died at the age of 39! Our son was told FMLA did not apply to this situation. Appalling!REPORT COMMENTS

I too lost my spouse and childhood sweetheart after 41 years to cancer. I was allowed to take what ever remained of my earned vacation time off to grieve. I had 2 days left after using it all to care for her at the end of her life. Seems a bit cruel.REPORT COMMENTS

Not only should there be FMLA leave for the loss of a spouse, but it should also be paid leave. I just lost my husband on 10/14/14 and it's still scary, sad, and painful at times. I have so much anxiety as there was no will and how in the world am I going to take care of everything. Please allow FMLA leave for the loss of loved ones.REPORT COMMENTS
