We need to get out of the Dark Ages when it comes to mental illness. We are kept in an unkind isolation and it is time for our voices to be heard. It is time to end the stigma--if not now, when? People need to become educated on the different types of mental illnesses and maybe then, we can make some progress. It's terrifying enough knowing that you're always going to be "trapped" inside of yourself, but combine that with the fear, misunderstanding and ignorance you sometimes get from people around you (even worse, your loved ones), it's the worst form of torture - feeling alone, scared, confused and at the end of your rope. Speaking from personal experience, a majority of the time I just want (sorry, need) someone to hold me tightly and make things feel more safe. I want to know that they're not going to run away because they're scared. Mental illness is tiresome, frightening and uncertain. It's upsetting that mental anguish sometimes is the cause of death to others, but not everyone who battles mental illness is homicidal or "evil." There's much too much loneliness and sadness inside of us. Too much confusion. We just need to be shown compassion (NOT pity). We need to believe that we're capable of getting better and that others believe we will, too.REPORT COMMENTS
