I am writing to ask for your support and co-sponsorship of H.R. 2254, the "Law Enforcement Officers Equity Act," that would grant law enforcement officer (LEO) retirement benefits to Postal Police Officers (PPO's). Postal Police Officers carry firearms, make arrests, and have police powers under USC 18 3061 (c). Postal Police protect the nations mail system, its employees, and infrastructure. They have been physically attacked, shot, and even killed in the performance of their duties. While some have expressed concern that legislation providing coverage for these officers would have a negative impact on personnel costs for government agencies, this argument is fundamentally flawed. Granting LEO status to Revenue Officers will actually decrease personnel costs by increasing morale and officer retention, thus decreasing the costs associated with training new officers. Therefore, I strongly urge you to co-sponsor H.R. 2254, which will provide well-deserved LEO retirement benefits to Postal Police Officers and other deserving federal employees performing dangerous law enforcement related duties.REPORT COMMENTS
