As a researcher who lived and worked in Syria for over twelve years, I know the kind, hospitable Syrian people well. These refugees were once ordinary people living normal lives, until their demand to live in freedom was met by barrel bombs dropped from the sky by their own government. They are now trapped between ISIS and Assad. We have a moral obligation to help these innocent people, particularly considering that our longstanding involvement in the region has played a direct role in the perpetuation of many of the problems Syrians must now face.
