I will start by saying that I fully support Israel's right to a peaceful existence and their right to defend themselves with the use of military power. I even support the U.S. providing aid to the Israeli military with the aim of helping them defend their nation as a close ally. That being said I DO NOT support the reckless and excessive use of Israel's military power that results in the deaths of innocent Palestinian civilians including the killing and maiming of Palestinian children. I DO NOT support the use of this power to the enforce inhumane and immoral treatment of the people of Gaza that keeps them in a perpetual state of poverty and deprives them of basic human rights like freedom of movement and access to food and medicine even during "peace time". I support the U.S. helping fund the "Iron Dome" that helps protect the people of Israel from rockets fired by Hamas. I DO NOT support the U.S. helping fund the artillery shells and similar weaponry that is used to destroy Palestinian hospitals, schools, and other U.N. designated shelters for Palestinian refugees. While we provide so much funding to the IDF, we must leverage our position as a close ally to ensure that the military power we provide them with is used responsibly, morally, and in accordance with international laws and treaties to limit civilian deaths and treat all peaceful civilians with dignity and ensure they have access to every basic human right and freedom. The notion that we as a nation can not support Israel's right to a peaceful existence and right to defend themselves without being critical of the actions the IDF and the reckless and excessive use of military power in this tragic ongoing conflict is a fallacy. While we can support Israel's right to defend themselves, THERE IS NO EXCUSE FOR DEAD AND MAIMED CHILDREN. As a nation, we are morally obligated to use our influence to pressure the Israeli government and military to end this current military operation and occupation of Gaza and seek a diplomatic and peaceful solution to the conflict with much more effort that is currently being given.
