Accurate, honest reporting is the ONLY way we can know how to fix this problem and save lives.

As a doula working in Monterey County Ca. I see that there is a razors edge and we walk it every day. I heard one doctor at a private hospital joke that if his collegues wanted to "help out a third world country" they could just go 20 miles away to our local County Hospital. With that kind of attitude it's no wonder our mamas are dying in childbirth and soon after. There is no excuse for our statictics of maternal death to be so high.

I am thankful that someone gave me the book "Misconceptions" before I got pregnant. It taught me that interventions are a slippery slope. A rising maternal death rate seems to me a clear indication that those interventions can have a far greater cost than going through major surgery.

how we treat our women and children in life and in death says a great deal about our country. we can do better. we must do better. imagine if your mother had died after giving birth to you...and it was never connected to her pregnancy. every woman is our sister, mother, niece, aunt and daughter. let us recognize now that we are all connected and that we must do right by the women of this great nation. thank you. thank you in advance for considering this petition with the seriousness that it requires.

Most women die from hemorrhage, deep vein thrombosis or blood clots, and, from underlying cardiac disease. Maybe if hospitals weren't so quick to release women after giving birth, this wouldn't be happening!
