US Government Arms Sales to Israel - Human Rights Concerns
This petition is deeply personal to me and many others who have witnessed the devastating effects of US government arms sales to Israel during the period from October 2023 until now. The weapons sold during this time facilitated a genocide against Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank by Israel's right-wing government. More than 100,000 civilians have been killed and injured as a result of these arms sales, with over 70% being children and women.
The destruction has been immense, with more than 85% of the Gaza population having their homes destroyed and now displaced. All civilian infrastructure in Gaza has been obliterated by these US weapons delivered to Israel. These are not just numbers or statistics; they represent real people whose lives have been irrevocably changed due to these actions.
Current US laws establish the conditions that regulate the approval of arms sales to foreign countries and limit such sales based on human rights concerns. The Arms Export Control Act (AECA; P.L. 90-629; 22 U.S.C. 2751 et seq.) and the Foreign Assistance Act of 1961 (FAA; P.L. 87-195; 22 U.S.C. 2151 et seq.) establish the provisions which control Foreign Military Sales (FMS) and Direct Commercial Sales (DCS) to foreign governments.
Both acts also require that such sales be subject to end-use monitoring (EUM). The acts authorize the termination of future sales and deliveries if a recipient is found to be in substantial violation of a sale-related agreement with the United States or to be otherwise using such defense articles for unauthorized purposes. In addition, the FAA and the executive branch can restrict certain arms sales to foreign recipients found to have committed human rights violations.
National Security Memorandum (NSM) requires “credible and reliable written assurances” that recipients of U.S. arms funded with congressional appropriations or provided according to Presidential drawdown authority will use such arms following applicable international law.
We must demand the cessation of all US government arms sales to Israel’s right-wing government and an investigation of arms sales transactions performed since Oct 2023 and why these arms sales were allowed despite their clear violation of international law and human rights principles.
We cannot stand by while innocent lives are lost due to our own government's actions. It is our responsibility as citizens not only to question but also to hold accountable those who make decisions that lead to such profound suffering.
