Urgent Call to Stop the Military Coup in Sudan

As a proud Sudanese American, am urgently calling on the President of the United States, Joseph R. Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris and Members of the United States House and Senate to immediately and tangibly support the Sudanese people in their quest for a democratically elected civilian government as an active military coup is occurring.

Tonight, I watch in horror as images of civilian cabinet members arrests continue to be disseminated across social media. The internet has been disconnected and I cannot get in touch with members of my family and friends in Sudan. I am horrified as I do not have a clear understanding of what is occurring in the Capitol due to the internet shutdown and disruption of telecommunication services.

News reports suggest that the Sudanese Prime Minister’s house is surrounded and that he is under house arrest, which is alarming and concerning.

On October 24th, US Special Envoy Jeffrey Feltman met with General Burhan who reportedly told him that he would work with the FFC and Cabinet to keep the transition on track.

This is an extremely explosive situation. Just three days ago millions of Sudanese people marched in the streets reaffirming their support for Prime Minister Hamdok and the continuation of Civilian Rule.

The active military coup taking place in Khartoum right now is led by General Mohamed Hamdan Dagallo and General Burhan, two vicious tyrannical authoritarian paramilitary leaders directly responsible for the June 3rd, 2019 massacre, which resulted in the deaths of hundreds of peaceful protesters demanding freedom, peace and justice.

The Generals are violent and heavily armed and have a long history participating in and facilitating egregious violent acts throughout Sudan for the past 30 years. Both of the Generals have worked directly under former Dictator Omar Al Bashier, who is wanted by the International Criminal Court for the genocide in Darfur.

I am calling on you to immediately condemn the actions of the Generals and to stand with the Sudanese people. I implore you to demand for the military leaders who’ve seized control over the country to step down and step aside.

Sudan remains crippled by the COVID-19 pandemic and in severe economic ruin. My loved ones barely have enough money for food, fuel and many remain unvaccinated as they do not have access to the Covid-19 vaccine.

For the first time in 30 years, children were born in a time when Sudan was not ruled by a military faction. Sudan’s Prime Minister, Dr. Abdalla Hamdok was working on ushering in a democratically elected civilian government. My loved ones believe in freedom, peace and justice and peacefully fought for it through non-violent demonstrations. I ask for you to not stand by idly as this coup threatens the prospects for the hopes and dreams of generations to be realized.

We implore Chairman Menendez and Chairman Meeks to hold an emergency briefing on the situation in Sudan and swiftly condemn the actions of the Generals. We ask for President Biden to appoint an Ambassador to Sudan. We are also asking for all telecommunications to be restored. Finally, we are calling on you to sanction General Burhan and General Hamedti immediately for their roles in the June 3rd Massacre, Genocide in Darfur and War Crimes in South Sudan.
