It is this kind of spirit that made our nation great and will sustain it through this period of darkness in our history. It is the nobility of ordinary persons that when faced with extradinary challenges give there all for the greater good.

The loss of these beautiful children is no doubt one of the greatest tragedies ever to weigh on the consciousness of this nation struggling to maintain its greatness! A sickening loss! But one that could have been so much worse had it not been for the acts of those heroic adults on hand that gave their lives and became literal angels for so many of these kids that will now be able to go on and do great things in their memory. It would seem that the Medal of Freedom - if not created with people like these teachers and administrators in mind, that is should have been. Ms. Soto, Ms. Murray, Ms. Hucksprung and Ms. Russo all died in the vein of our greatest war heroes and should be honored as such. Saving a learning disabled child, charging the attacker unarmed and making the ultimate sacrifice, hiding the children and putting your body in front of the remaining children left exposed and then dying hugging your children as one final comfort in the face of unimaginable horror! I say these things out loud and it seems just too awful t o be real - reminiscent of the 9/11 stories. Being an American has frankly been discouraging for years as we seem to consistently stand in the way of human progress due to gridlock and archaic ideologies disguised as protecting the Constitution, Christianity, gun rights. America has always been about an idea, and we are certainly no longer an ideal. Not a piece of paper, not one amendment that consistently tramples on so many unsuspecting American?s right and freedom to experience the others. Award this honor promptly and without bias and allow that one thread to connect all of us, if just for that moment, and let us all remember what America is at it?s greatest ? fair, compassionate, civilized, caring, peaceful and an example to the world that despite our differences, despite our tremendous diversity that at our core we are still here because we believe in that idea. And that it is possible that community and personal freedom can in fact coexist in this nation. Anthony Chadwick

Seeing how this brave educator thought first to save the children she was trusted with and placing their safety above her own. This young woman is a shining example of true heroism. To not recognize this would a serious mistake.

I look at Viki Soto and see my own daughter who is also 27, a teacher and loves her students. My heart is broken for this young woman's family and the children who loved her. May she soar with the Angels!
