Temporary Protected Status for Libyans Currently in the US

We are asking that Obama add Libya to the list of countries designated for TPS to allow current Libyan Nationals to remain in the United States due to the circumstances in Libya.

Dear President Obama and Respected Congressmen and Congresswomen,

The Secretary of Homeland Security may designate a foreign country for TPS due to conditions in the country that temporarily prevent the country's nationals from returning safely, or in certain circumstances, where the country is unable to handle the return of its nationals adequately. We ask that you grant TPS to eligible nationals of Libya, who are already in the United States.

Many of the Libyans who are residing in the United States have been relying on government funded scholarships to help pay for tuition and general expenses. Libyans students who have been relying on these funds have been told that as of 5/31/2011 their scholarships will be discontinued and they will no longer receive funding.

Currently, Libyan students are able to work on campus at a maximum of 20 hours per week at minimum wage. At those rates these students, most of whom are married and some of whom have children (a majority of these children are natural born American citizens), will not be able to take care of themselves and their families. Although these students are legally residing in America, they will be forced to leave and go back to Libya, which is in a clear state of war.

We are asking that Libya be designated for TPS to allow these Libyans to gain work authorization outside of school and fend for their loved ones. Please do not take this issue lightly and support our cause. With countries like Sudan, Haiti, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Somalia, Honduras already designated, Libya should qualify without hesitation.

Please understand that these Students are only looking for a means of providing for themselves, a right that any human being should have. They are not asking for the government to provide financial aid. They are not asking for citizenship. They are only asking for a gateway to supporting their loved ones and a solution to completing their education.

Mr. Obama and respected Congressmen and Congresswomen, We have elected you to represent us. Beyond representing us, you have the ability to represent all of humankind. With your support, we will be saving thousands of lives from going back to a country that is in a state of war. Without your support, we will be putting them in danger.

Sincerely,

A Concerned Human
