Support HR 4216 - Maternal Health Accountability Act of 2014

High maternal mortality rates in the US are unacceptable!

According to statistics from the WHO, the maternal mortality rate for the United States in 2013 was 28 deaths per 100,000 live births. This rate is much worse than many countries that are considered to have inferior health systems. Worse yet, many of these deaths are preventable and disproportionately affect women who are poor and belong to a minority group.

The members of the United Nations agreed to eight key areas in which to focus efforts to improve the human condition around the world, called the Millenium Development Goals. One of those goals was to improve maternal health by reducing maternal mortality by 2/3 from 1990 to 2015. We are failing miserably at achieving that goal. The maternal mortality rate has tripled since 1987, even while advances are made in improving mortality rates in other areas.

We, your constituents, request your support HR of 4216, the Maternal Health Accountability Act of 2014, which will direct the Department of Health and Human Services to research and track maternal mortality rates in the US, and develop a plan for addressing the problem. This bill is currently in front of the House Subcommittee on Health, chaired by Rep. Joseph Pitts of Pennsylvania. We urge you to contact Rep. Pitts in regards to HR 4216, and take the steps necessary to move this legislation forward.
