This is a disgrace and needs to be stopped. There are no horses that need to die this way and transportation across the border for slaughter needs to be made illegal.Oct 14th, 2011Someone from Hernando, FL writes:

"Is there anything wrong with a horse processing facility?" I doubt I have enough room here to list everything that's wrong. First, horse slaughter in unbelievably cruel. Anyone who says it's "humane" is deluded or lying. It is not "euthanasia." Euthanasia is performed by a licensed veterinarian, and has nothing in common with slaughter. I have been inside a US slaughter plant, and I know what I've seen with my own eyes. They were NO better than the ones in Canada or the European Union - the major market for our horse meat - regulated ones in Mexico. We have always shipped thousands of horses to Mexico and Canada, not to mention long distances in this huge country of ours. I never heard it mentioned before the slaughter proponents wanted plants located in the US. We are shipping more horses to slaughter now than when the domestic plants were open. If slaughter is the answer, why are "unwanted" horses increasing in number? It's because slaughter is the PROBLEM, not the SOLUTION. The availability of slaughter encourages breeders to continue their insane levels of over-breeding. We are in the worst recession since the Great Depression, yet they did not reduce the numbers of new horses brought into a market that couldn't support the previous foal crop. If they knew they would have no dumping ground for the thousands of new horses every year they would STOP producing them or go broke. Simple economics should tell anyone not to produce more when you can't sell the product you already have on hand. Also, there is an extremely serious problem with American horses and food safety. Horses are not food animals in the US, they are not raised under the strict rules that apply to raising food animals. The FDA considers horses non-food animals, so it doesn't require the manufactures of horse products to run the expensive and extensive tests to determine drug clearance times in horses. A long list of horse products - both prescription and over-the-counter - have this warning on the label: Not for use in horses intended for food purposes. Since NO horse is "intended" for food, we freely use all these popular and widely prescribed products. When the kill buyers obtain these horses - by stealing, misrepresenting themselves as legitimate buyers to horse sellers, or by outbidding people who would give a horse a good home at auction - they know absolutely nothing about their health history. No paperwork is received from the owners of these horse as is required by European Union regulations; they do not observe the 6 month quarantine for unknown horses; the affidavits the killers sign stating the horses are drug free are of course false. So, our horses, although undoubtedly tainted with substances that should have permanently removed them from the food chain - are shipped overseas to be eaten by unsuspecting consumers. This is not only egregiously immoral, it is also highly illegal. In the EU - where they have a very strict traceability system and verREPORT COMMENTS

I support S.1176: American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act of 2011 because the horrific ?industry? of horse slaughter for human consumption must cease, and a prohibition is the only way to achieve that cessation. Every horse owner has the ability, if not the immediate means, to euthanize and dispose of their horse?s carcass. This expense and effort can and should be planned for in advance. It?s fairly simple to arrange for a dog to be euth?d and to properly put that body to rest, but a horse?s size is another reason to plan in advance. There?s no justification for failing to plan. For those horse owners, breeders, and breed associations who want slaughter as their garbage can, they can not justify sending a horse to slaughter. You profit from that horse, and you take pleasure in its abilities, companionship, and trust. Commercial transport to slaughter and slaughter are the ultimate betrayal. Local, state, and federal legislators create laws defining humane and inhumane treatment of animals. We call on Washington now to define slaughter as inhumane treatment. Ban horse slaughter for human consumption.REPORT COMMENTS

This has been ongoing since 2007. We need to stop American horses from ending up on the menu in foreign countries. How can Congress be so heartless, how can they support this much animal creulty - for profit. Please Congress, your delays just continue to torture horses further.REPORT COMMENTS
