Stop making casus belli of Taiwan

Republic of China (ROC), or Taiwan is a very small nation. That is all that remains of a large country which was established in 1911. Nowadays, our sovereignty was acknowledged by 14 nations. One of them, Vatican, just has the observer non-member status at the UN. We've been involved into the hard and bitter struggle for independence from mainland China for the vast part of the history of our existence. And we are the last bulwark of Chinese democracy. Our nation also has a critical influence on the world trade and economy, and the rich cultural heritage and high living standards, as well. Yet, the ROC was originally one of the founders of the United Nations. It was our nation which got membership in the UN Security Council. But it was treacherously passed to the Chinese mainland (PRC).

Support of the ROC by such bastion of democracy as the USA is at best controversial, and at worst provocative, despite everything. Last year alone was marked by variety of defiant actions on the part of our American friends. Those were visits to Taiwan of the powerful US politicians known for their anti-Beijing stance, globally advertising of supplies of strategic goods and the military aid for Taiwan as a clause of the US military budget for 2023, and loudly announced invitations to full-scale joint military exercises.

As a result, that behavior has only harmed Taiwanese. It's been a long time since we experienced such clear and present military threat from mainland China. Each time the USA dodged further confrontation with Beijing and left us alone watching another mass concentration of neighbor military equipment and weapons at our borders. Few know that the last time, the day before the Christmas day threat, all family members of American diplomats were urgently flown back home from the American Institute in Taiwan. At the same time such local embassy staff like me were suspended without any severance pay.

Our worldviews differ with the Mainland. We, however, were one Nation. Like everybody else, all that Taiwanese want now is peaceful coexistence, and fruitful cooperation and trade, just like seemed to be a few years ago. The USA, though, still continue to raise military tension in our region. They constantly calculate their possible losses in case of PRC invasion of Taiwan. By their actions and hostile rhetoric on our name, American politicians themselves artificially increase the probability that this invasion would start.

That is why, on behalf of my sensible countrymen, I demand the USA to change their position on our Republic. Also, our request is to abandon US military foothold in Taiwan, which Washington has already started building. The US actions risk a devastating and senseless conflict between the USA and the mainland China. Following its results, the Republic of China with its role of a 'pretext for war' would cease to exist.
