Solve Border Problem
Republicans and Democrats often differ on key issues. In fact, both sides almost exclusively vote along party lines these days, with only a few exceptions.
But when certain problems become too big to ignore, both sides will agree that something must be done. And that’s what’s happening, as the southern border crisis continues to worsen.
Now, both right-wing and left-wing politicians are demanding that President Joe Biden act immediately.
Democrats and Republicans from southern border states have submitted proposals to the Biden administration, which should help to deal with the ongoing migration issue.
And they’re begging that Biden consider these proposals rapidly, because things definitely aren’t getting any better.
The lawmakers include Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX), Sen. Kyrsten Sinema (D-AZ), Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-TX), and Rep. Tony Gonazales (R-TX). In this case, both Red and Blue are teaming up.
They all came together at an international bridge between Reynosa, Mexico and Hidalgo, Texas and called on the White House to act — immediately.
As Gonzales said (via Washington Examiner):
There’s plenty of people doing nothing, right? The next easiest thing to do is to blame somebody else, and there’s plenty of people blaming somebody else.
I would argue one of the most difficult things to do is to roll up your sleeves, go to work, and try to find solutions to the problem. … It doesn’t matter whose fault it is.
What matters is we have to solve this problem before it gets worse.
These lawmakers are pushing the Bipartisan Border Solutions Act, a reaction to the skyrocketing number of foreign travelers trying to enter the U.S. Currently, it’s at a 21-year high.
The bill they propose makes some significant changes:
It would alter how the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) responds to undocumented travelers and asylum-seekers, and it would track unaccompanied minors after they’ve been released.
Rep. Cuellar said he’s “glad that they’re taking some of the ideas.”
He added that when 88 percent of asylum requests are rejected, we shouldn’t be simply letting these people into the country. The Bipartisan Border Solutions Act would change how this works.
Sen. Sinema pressed the administration “to take these actions and implement them right away.”
Perhaps most importantly, these lawmakers are on the front lines — they see the effects of the border crisis every day. And they know what it’s doing to border states and the country.
As Sen. Cornyn said:
There’s a lot of people talking about the border who’ve never been to the border. They don’t frankly know what they’re talking about. Nobody’s raising their hand and offering ideas.
We thought it was important, working together in a bipartisan, bicameral way … to come up with a solution that we think will contribute to making progress.
