Sensible Changes in Child Support

Antiquated Child Support Laws make it too difficult for parents to adequately provide for their chidren. This is an attempt to make fair changes in those laws so that more parents can be more supportive of their children.

Child support laws are not effective; most states have penalties such as taking away the driver's license, or putting the non-custodial parent in jail for failure to pay child support. What good do these laws do? If the non-custodial parent doesn't have a license, they won't get to work in the first place. If they are in jail, the child support still isn't being paid either.

If a person whom has always paid support loses their job, home, etc.. and cannot pay... and arrears mount up... The laws and punishments are set in place to make it so that they may never live a normal life. Credit destroyed, no license, jail time, etc etc. Also, there is nothing in place to insure that the money is being spent on the child. Many custodial parents spend that money on plastic surgery, alcohol, cigarettes, drugs, going out socially, etc, etc. The non-cutodial parent should not be the only one considered in support. Also, many people have been severly overcharged for monthly support payments. I know of someone whom was double charged due to a computer error ($850 instead of $425) and when they spoke with Child Support Enforcement they fixed it after 3 months and said no, he would not get back the mistakenly taken money. Child Support needs to be regulated by audits. Proof of how the money is spent needs to be shown as well (Card system like Food/Financial Support has?). Then there is the case of the fact that the recipient of support does not need to claim it as income. Why not? Oh, cause the person paying support already pays the taxes on it. Is the person paying that chunk of money just not enough? Does it not make more sense to tax the person that actually "Receives" it as income? Man or woman is irrelevant. If both parents are allegedly equally responsible for the conception of the child. Then it needs to be fair across the board. If some intelligent changes are made, Non-custodial parents would be in a better situation to fulfill the needs of the child/children.

Child Support is literally destroying lives. In so many ways. Make the laws and punishments fitting and fair. Please, please do something to fix this horribly broken system.

Sincerely, A Concerned Citizen
