Saving the Endangered Species Act
Dear Congress,
I would formally like to petition against the recent proposals that will greatly dimenish the Endangered Species Act. Through this Act, hundreds of endangered animals are protected as well as their habitats. This act is commonly referred to as one of the most important environmental laws in history.
As of November 2012, there were 1,434 species of plants and animals protected as threatened or endangered. If the ESA were to be gutted, species like the manatee, the bald eagle, the grizzly bear and the grey wolf could potentially become extinct. Animals like the grizzly bear and grey wolf are keystone species which means ecosystems largely depend on them, and if they were removed these ecosystems would drastically change.
I am mostly concerned that theses changes will affect protection of endangered species and their habitats. Instead of protecting habitats and the animals that live there, these proposals will highlight or promote corporations over the immense value that these animals provide to their ecosystem and to the world as a whole.
The ecosystem will be detrimentally affected by these changes in the long term because if one species ceases to exist, one or two other members in the rest of the chain could cease to exist too. Just as it takes along time for species to reach the verge of extinction, it takes along time to bring them back.
For 4 decades, the Endangered Species Act has provided critical protection for wildlife and plants that has prevented extinction of hundreds of species, recovered many others and conserved necessary habitats essential to these species.
Please end the environmental turmoil of the United States and save the Endangered Species Act. Thank you.
