Remove Ted Cruz as Chair of Subcommittee on Space, Aeronautics, and Related Sciences

Ted Cruz extremism disqualifies him to head the Subcommittee on Space, Aeronautics, and Related Sciences.

The Subcommittee on Space has legislative jurisdiction and general oversight and investigative authority on all matters relating to astronautical and aeronautical research and development including: national space policy, including access to space; sub-orbital access and application

A review of Mr. Cruz's education and professional career reveals no qualification for the position as chair of a committee responsible for our national science initiatives. Mr. Cruz has demonstrated that his political and personal views are more important in his decision making than to the scientific advancement of this nation.

Most condemning is Mr. Cruz's infamous hours-long speech in September 2013 led to a 16-day government shutdown barring 97 percent of NASA employees from appearing for work. Interns to the agency were temporarily displaced when the NASA-provided housing was closed during the shutdown, and many have said the agency suffered lasting damage due to the freeze.

The Houston Chronicle which had endorsed Cruz in the general election, regretted that he had not lived up to the standard set by the previous U.S. Senator from Texas, Kay Bailey Hutchison. After a deal was made to end the 2013 shutdown and to extend the debt-ceiling deadline, Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell called Cruz's actions "not a smart play" and a "tactical error".

In 2014, Cruz spoke at an event held by the watchdog group In Defense of Christians (IDC). Cruz was booed by the group after making statements considered pro-Israel that were viewed by some pundits as intentionally provocative. When the audience refused to stop booing, Cruz eventually left the stage.

In signing this petition we are stating that Mr. Cruz's extremist views and actions disqualifies him from any influence over such a critical committee in a field that he holds no experience or even ideological acceptance.

Please remove him from this committee.
