Recognize National ADHD Awareness Week

The needs of the ADHD community are unique, substantial and worthy of attention.

Please join ADHD Aware, a nonprofit run by and for people with ADHD, in educating your constituents that October 16-22 is National ADHD Awareness Week, as we lead a national campaign to educate Americans regarding the prevalence and seriousness of ADHD.

ADHD is a disease that greatly affects America. According to the National Institutes of Health more than 8% of the US adult population?about 20 million people?develops ADHD at some point in their life. Children are particularly affected by ADHD. The average age of onset is 7 years old and children with ADHD are at higher risk of developing problems with peers, major injuries, learning difficulties and emergency room admissions. And while the public largely perceives ADHD to affect boys, 1 in 4 patients is a girl.

Because the diagnosis is often stigmatized and belittled, millions of Americans do not seek treatment resulting in lost productivity and potential that leaves us all diminished. You can show your support by circulating the Are You ADHD Aware? quiz, posting it on your website, distributing it to staff and constituents, or speaking publicly about the need to better understand ADHD.

With your support, we can change public perceptions about ADHD by increasing awareness of the seriousness and prevalence of the disease.
