Protecting Personal Information Online by Regulating Data Brokers

Our private information can be easily accessed through “people-search websites” or “data brokers,” which are websites that collect personal information. That great amount of sensitive information can be accessed by ANYONE, whether their intentions are good or bad, so this can lead to identity theft.

Data brokers that are NOT credit reporting agencies (CRAs) are NOT required by law:
---to keep personal information private
---to inform the people of what information has been collected about them
---to allow people to access their reports
---to allow people to fix incorrect information.
Non-credit reporting data brokers allow ANYONE to access any other person's personal information.

Whereas, CRAs must follow certain criteria under the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA). CRAs limit access to banks, insurance companies, employers, etc. because they have a legitimate reason for the info. This protects the privacy of the people. They allow the people to access their reports and give the ability to fix incorrect info. They also list the organizations which accessed the person's information.

The solution is simple. I propose that:
"Non-credit reporting data brokers should be required, by law, to follow the same regulations as CRAs in order to protect our personal information online." Support this cause by signing this petition.
