I am writing to express my concern with the Navy's plan for sonar and explosives training in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. This plan will deafen, injure, and even kill countless whales, dolphins and other marine mammals. The waters around Hawaii and Southern California include critical habitat for endangered blue and humpback whales and would be among the hardest hit. The threat to even one North Atlantic right whale may be one too many, as fewer than 400 of these survivors now hover on the brink of extinction.REPORT COMMENTS

I expect the government and our military to do all it can to balance the need for defense with the health of ocean life. Considering the already precarious condition of marine mammal populations the use of sonar should be extremely limited in scope, particularly during critical times in the life cycle of whales and other marine life. While warfar exercises are important training, the use of harmful technology is not a critical element. I urge the military to restrict the use of SONAR and other harmful noise disturbance to be limited to only those essential for actual defense. Simulations that are not harmful can be developed to be just as effective for training purposes. Without healthy oceans there will be nothing to defend.REPORT COMMENTS
