Prison Reform

End The United States Addiction To Incarceration

Dear Congressmen

I am writing to bring attention to a problem in our prison system, human beings are incarcerated for 20 and 30 years for non violent crimes. Statistics show that our country the United States of America imprison more people for longer periods of time than any country. The prison system is over populated costing the Federal Government $6.874 Billion dollars a year.

The US leads the world with the largest prison population. Even though the US population consists of only 5% of the world?s population, it holds 25% of the world?s prison population. Currently there are over 2 million Americans behind bars, and the numbers continue to steadily grow. Our prison system is one of the largest human rights atrocities in the world.

I am asking for a commitment from you to bring about the much needed prison reform for an outdated system. There is nothing wrong with being hard on crime but we are being hard on criminals. Psychologically, I don?t think there is anyone in the science world that would argue that positive reinforcement works better than negative reinforcement. Yet our current criminal system uses negative reinforcement? This seems very counter intuitive to our current ?proven? way to limit or mitigate our overgrowing criminal population. There are plenty examples of other countries and how they use positive reinforcement in criminal intervention.

The housing of the largest prison population is so costly there are no monies available for education or rehabilitation for the inmates so we are locking men and women up for ten to thirty years for non violent crimes with no parole, no education, no rehabilitation, no chance for one to redeem themself and no positive reinforcement for negative behavior. This information alone makes the United States of America hypocritical in human rights.

We are asking for you to step out against this atrocity.

Sincerely,

Supporters of Prison Reform
