Preserve the Use of Safe and Effective Electronic Cigarettes

Certain U.S. Federal agencies are trying to regulate e-cigarettes out when they have not even published the full potential damage of real cigarettes.

Cigarette products have killed millions in the world and smokers find it hard to give it up even now. Smokers have found a solution that is saving lives yet we are at risk of losing our lifeline. We are requesting that the powers that be at the FDA allow us to continue to use and purchase these nicotine delivery devices at our own discretion while further testing commences from the FDA. If you ban these devices millions will return to tobacco products which would be a guaranteed death sentence for many.

The FDA is trying to say that e-Cigarettes (Electronic Cigarettes) are gateway drugs and will lead to more smoking by minors. The FDA also wants to point out that the e-Cigarettes can be toxic. This although somewhat true ignores several obvious facts.

One even if e-Cigarettes become inexpensive and marketed enough for them to be widely available to the general public as cigarettes are they would not be as easily maintained or used by the buyer as regular burning (match lit) cigarettes. This is because of topics such as recharging the battery, refilling the liquid nicotine, making sure not to overuse parts. Making sure certain parts don't overheat. That's not to mention the research needed to confirm which product works best for you. Lastly the $40 - $100 price tag places it significantly out of reach.

If I was to solely experiment I would more then likely buy a $5 - $7 pack of regular cigarettes and ask for matches:

1) It is far less costly

2) much more widely available (most e-cigarettes must be ordered and you must wait for them in the mail)

3) the on-demand nature would also produce instant gratification (no waiting for a battery to charge, just light-up and smoke)

4) Regular cigarettes which do not need to be refilled or recharged can be easily hidden, stored, and maintained. While it would be hard to have an electronic cigarette around without leaving clues.

It would thus be nearly impossible that an adventureous minor would experiment with e-cigarettes over regular cigarettes due to the initial costs and the greater risk of being caught.

As for the chemicals released by e-Cigarettes it is not as clearly defined as the FDA may have you believed. It has been known for quite some time that the Tobacco companies and possibly the FDA itself has kept the public in the dark about the effects of smoking. What has not been considered was that the FDA may have kept itself wilfully ignorant. Furthermore the content of a cigarette is a soup of about 600 FDA approved additives (some of which are known toxins by themselves) which combine to more then 4,000 different substances. The FDA only rated some of the 600 initial substances as being known toxins, and never tested the more then 4000 plus compounds.

With the harm that is well known with tobacco what more could it hurt us to just allow us to help ourselves for the time being with these devices many of us have been using for years. We just want to be heard and want you to give this device its fair hearing.
